Default Baby dies after Indian hospital removes her from incubator over £2.30 cost

A newborn baby girl has died at a government hospital in India's northern Punjab state after doctors removed her from an incubator as her parents were too poor to pay the 200 rupees (£2.30) needed to keep her inside it.

Born prematurely on July 20, the jaundiced baby girl needed incubator support to survive, state health officials said.

The Civil Hospital authorities initially provided the baby incubator support for two days but on Wednesday night asked her father Sanjiv Kumar to pay Rs200 towards electricity charges needed to operate the life saving machine.

    Rest In Peace poor girl

Nobody from the employees could afford that money to save the baby's life? Why also the parents didn't go to the media?

Probably had no one to help them out. If they could not afford 200 rupees or could not find someone to borrow 200 from, I guess they were the lowest of the lows on the social ladder. Media would not be even a remote possibility in the radar of their thoughts.

And knowing the media, I would hazard a thought "if the child hadn't died, it wouldn't have become news in a country like India, right?"

Legally, no. Although the least hospital could have done was push some paperwork and try to get some cash relief from the contingency fund available with any of the local legislators or contacted any of the local NGOs or charity organisation. Not only that, many hospitals have a small staff funded charity fund and several trusts run by local businesses and philanthropists. Although the article doesn't make it clear if the parents had exceeded the natal care assistance provided by the government or not, but the child should have lived.
