Im sorry you spent most of your life in China where there is NO self criticism and ONLY social harmony. Every year I go back to Chengdu and I asked myself why is the CCTV news report repeat every 10 mins? Could there be only 10 minutes of news in all of China? Oh thats right! My grandfather believed Mao when he asked for self criticism of the CCP in the early 60s and guess what? There was a bullet with his name on it and only due to luck was he spared and sent to a "work re-education camp".
You remind me of the relatives lecturing me to move back to China because America is so dangerous, everyone is shooting each other and I LOL'd soooo hard as when my cousins went to pick me up from the airport on the way back he almost hit 5 to 6 people crossing the street and his excuse was that if they value their life they would watch out for his car and that they were "only peasants".
A country that has an official propaganda department has no media. A culture that inherently does not value truth can not pretend to know the truth. A country were "social harmony" is enshrined over free speech cannot hope to convince the West that they speak the truth.
China is light years behind the US culturally, I say this as a Chinese American. A country that CANNOT look itself in the eye and confront its past can not pretend to attain greatness. If you wish to learn modern history you cannot do so in China but have to go to the West. That in itself is a sad sad fact.
But its okay, remember China's perpetually the victim and any criticism of anything relating to China is just the foolish white man being jealous.

For those who have not seen it, Chinese state media which they even un-ironically call CCTV, is HILARIOUS. It is also quite hypnotizing. I watched a lot while staying up late on vacation in Jamaica, which for some reason, has a Chinese cultural mission or something. Good for laughs and a real education about thought control.
