What's funnier is the fact some MP.nets have defended this as 'patriotism'. Tarting up an oppressive, murderous ideology and regime is not patriotism.

When HK was back to China in 1997, I knew it would happen sooner or later. In some way, it's some doomed tragedy which Hong Kong can't avoid. First taken by UK which "brainwashed" HK for many years, then after China had the capability to take it back, it's doomed to "brainwash" them again. The only issue left is how and when. Now it's coming.

Actually I know many Hong Kong young guys, they from the bottom just think they are Hong Kong's, not Chinese. But time can kill everything, now the time stands aside the mainland.

How did the British brainwash Hong Kongers? The only brain modification they did was to birth a unique Hong Kong identity

Without them, HK would just be another nameless, identical part of that vast land called China

Insanley one sided view on things. So Seattle is another nameless, identical part of a vast land call the United States of America? Ottawa in Canada? That logic is just absurd.

The British did its fair share of "brainwashing" on the Hong Kong citizens during their rule, only it as called "assimilation". When China does something, it's called brainwashing.

Stop splitting hairs. You know what I meant

Hong Kong identity is unique, or rather, more unique and different than the differences between other lands in China, whether even North or South.

It is the first Chinese nationhood born in freedom.

HK identity, or citizenship, is not unique, but useful. Otherwise, so many pregnant women from mainland would not go to great lengths to give birth in HK.

    Its beyond that

Ask native Hong Kongers. They're around the world. They have a very unique identity...its basically even down to little things like that Chow Yun-Fat could never have come from the mainland...he had to have been Hong Kong to be who he is. Again, its little things like that that make up an identity...whether personal, or larger.

All rules of common decency normally rigidly enforced here seem to count little as soon as China is involved.
Add to this Chinese rarely fight back, that makes it double-tasty.

No, the Chinese do fight back, but are labeled Chicoms or Chinabots or whatever the moment they say anything remotely contradictory of the status quo here.

Such sense of pride is being eroded away, as HK is becoming less and less important to China's economy.

Long time ago, when China is closed and isolated, HK is the only gateway to the world for mainland. That's why the Maoist could easily invade and take HK but chose not to. HK is losing this position since China was opened up. No need to channel vast majority of international trade through HK any more. They can go by Shanghai or any mainland coastal city. HK depends more and more on the money from mainland. (Lots of people from mainland go to HK to shopping. ) I can say HK's economy is stagnating or dying. For example, the film industry is not doing well. They even have to change the script to fit the taste and regulation of mainland which is a major market.

And there is a lot hot money from mainland speculating on the real estate market, pushing price of living higher. When people feel frustrated and angry about something, naturally they swear, ridicule, and protest.

You get labeled 'Chinabot' when you espouse a 'China is always right' attitude, no matter what they do.

HongKong is the First Chinese nationhood born in freedom? ROC had many failure when it governed Mainland China, but you can't say it isn't free. Can't believe some one can candy coat imperialism with such pride.

The reason for HongKong's success is because China's misfortune and European Empires' especial status in China. When China was in turmoils for nearly a century, the great minds and richs all over the country rush to foreign colonies and concessions in China (including HongKong) for safety. Those people include Chow Yun-Fat's parents and John Woo, the director who made Chow famous. The something happened during the 4th century when norther from Yellow River migrate to the South of Yangtze River because constant war and weak government.

When China start to get it's act together, HongKong was the gate to a vast country and HongKonger are the first one to milk the cash cow. I still remember the day when my relative get back from HongKong at 1991 with a Laserdisc they get for $100 without the player, books that said Deng was killed by PLA during 89, and the fake Rolexs. If Germany win the Great War, Qingdao can easily replace HongKong's place in this part of Chinese history.

Hong Kong's unique identity was created by the abnormal China. When China get back to the norm HongKong will lost all her special status and force to compete with the traditional big city like ShangHai and GuangZhou on equal term. I am looking forward to see how the "special" HongKonger can adopt to this new situation, or simply run away like their forefather did before when China was in trouble.
