So what do you look for in a good rum? I admit to complete ignorance regarding rum, be it good or bad. I'm a tequila guy, but I pass the rum aisle and wonder what it's all about.

Please, don't direct me to some crazy expensive brand, just a nice starter that if I don't like I can give to a friend. Oh and nothing that I need to smoke a cigar or a pipe to enjoy...that **** will never again be in my lungs.

The Ron Zacapa is about $45 a bottle, and is a great deal. If I really wanted a cheaper sipping rum, I would go for Appleton.

What I look for in a rum are the same things I look for in any type of liquor; tastes good, goes down smooth.

That being said, the Zapcapa is the winner, hands down. It is darker, but not sweeter or heavier like Myers. The Zacapa is just very, very silky smooth like a truly fine very, very old whiskey. It has no bite at all. Not just a little bite; none at all. It is really that smooth. It is so tasty and fine that it is hard to do it justice in the spoken language.

I am encouraged in that I even found Ron Zacapa in our local Safeway. I cannot recommend Ron Zapaca strongly enough as the very best sipping rum for the buck out there. It blows the hell out of everything else I have tired thus far.

Now I have to try that Haitian $70 a bottle stuff.... This research is not helping my retirement fund.
Thanks for the review. I now need to find some of this.

I would second Appletons for a great, medium priced Rum.

I've not tried Appleton's but the Pyrat and Cruzan Aged Single Barrel are in the mid-high $30 range.

Thanks guys, I'm off to the liquer store. A buddy swears that Kraken rum is great too, a little less expensive than some suggested, so I'll keep you posted. Maybe Specs has airline bottles to try

Last time I bought a bottle of Appleton's, it was only $12. But that was in Panama, last year.

I've had Kraken and Sailor Jerry's both are good, but not as good to me as Anniversario or Pyrat.
