Default Israel seen as Middle East ally and spy threat

By Adam Goldman and Matt Apuzzo - The Associated Press

Posted : Sunday Jul 29, 2012 9:36:33 EDTWASHINGTON — The CIA station chief opened the locked box containing the sensitive equipment he used from his home in Tel Aviv, Israel, to communicate with CIA headquarters in Virginia, only to find that someone had tampered with it. He sent word to his superiors about the break-in.

The incident, described by three former senior U.S. intelligence officials, might have been dismissed as just another cloak-and-dagger incident in the world of international espionage, except that the same thing had happened to the previous station chief in Israel.

It was a not-so-subtle reminder that, even in a country friendly to the United States, the CIA was itself being watched. In a separate episode, according to another two former U.S. officials, a CIA officer in Israel came home to find the food in the refrigerator had been rearranged. In all the cases, the U.S. government believes Israel’s security services were responsible.

You've got members of a different spy agency on your home turf, you're not gonna watch them? lol.
Everyone spies on everyone, this shouldn't come as a surprise.

Nothing new, probably one of the biggest counterintelligence threats to the US.

Why isn't he serving life for espionage?
Try doing that in Russia and see where he ends.

He was expecting Mossad agents to leave an origami swan on his pillow.

Err, this happened in Tel Aviv, not Virginia.

As the CIA station chief he has a diplomatic passport, and is not a "spy" in the illegal sense.

In Prison for 15 years. Russia's prison sentences seem to be quite laxing compared to ours, especially their Treason charges.

Chief of Station in such a country is usually an overt (to the host nation's intelligence departments) post. They're declared and used for liason and whatnot.

Israel is generally regarded as a "not quite friendly" country. Yeah, collecting happens by everyone but Israel is much more aggressive about it than what other allies are.

Nope, read enough of BS in your post, no point of re-reading it.

I love the fact you think you know what means of counterintelligence other U.S friendly countries use and how are they 'less aggressive' than the Israeli ones.
