Exclamation Soviet OMON assaults on Lithuanian border posts (Graphic)

The most serious attack occurred when OMON troops from Riga attacked the Lithuanian customs post in Medininkai on the Vilnius–Minsk highway on July 31, 1991. It is thought that the attack took place around 4 am because a watch belonging to one of the victims stopped at this hour.Seven officers were shot and killed: Mindaugas Balavakas and Algimantas Juozakas (officers of the Special Division ARAS), Juozas Janonis and Algirdas Kazlauskas (officers of the highway police), Antanas Musteikis, Stanislovas Orlavičius and Ričardas Rabavičius (customs officers).Rabavičius died on August 2 in hospital. The only survivor, customs officer Tomas Šernas, suffered severe brain damage and became disabled. The ARAS officers were supposed to provide protection to the post and were armed. However, their weapons were missing from the scene and there were no signs of returned fire. The Lithuanian officers were forced to lie down on the ground and then shot in the head, execution style. Those killed were buried in the Antakalnis Cemetery.

This year I visited the infamous customs post (sadly just because of work, it must be more like tourism/history tour...).
Respect to those who laid their heads for freedom. RIP.

Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union and started putting up border posts, the Soviets viewed them as illegal, I believe Lithuania is still trying to find the perpetrators.

should have built that post with a trapdoor leading into a secure room into the basement ... as soon as every OMON member in the room you set off the claymores in the walls ...

Back then, there weren't many weapons available.

I was never very fond of OMON. I don't remember where but I've heard that a good portion of the war crimes committed in Chechnya were committed by OMON members. In my opinion they give Russian special forces a bad name.

not a good enough justification for the grave accusations you make after this part.
But hey, don't inconvenience yourself looking up your sources. It's much easier just claiming something afterall.

In the course of the Chechen conflict the OMON was accused of severe human rights abuses,[21] including abducting, torturing and killing civilians. As of 2000, the bulk of war crimesrecorded by international organisations in Chechnya appeared to have been committed by the OMON.

Thankfully the only source I could find was Wikipedia, so there's a chance my information may be false.

Actually one perpetrator (Konstantin Michailov) is on trial now. Most likely he is going to get life imprisonment. Others still hide in Russia.

Indeed, they should of prepared to bunker themselves down into a hole in the ground and then hope to kill everyone when they are in the room above you out of your sight (I guess psychic abilities would of told them that every OMON member was in the vacinity?), seriously what?

Anyway rip to those who died, still a very sad event

There are professional soldiers among OMON but not all of them.
R.I.P. all the victims of soviet forces in Baltic States in the spring of `91.
