I'm afraid they didn't have cinema in the days of the Viking.

Ironclad and The Mongol are also pretty good.
A less known - but still pretty good - movie is "Shadow of the Sword". It has a the guy who plays Jaimie Lannister in Game of Thrones as a Landsknecht-turned-executioner. Flesh and Blood with Rutger Hauer is also a "medieval movie" many people like. Be advised it has a less romantic middle age, though.

Lansknechts were more renaissance than medieval though...

The movie is set in 1499 if I remember correctly.

    So definately not medieval then...

Was it "The Name of the Rose" with Sean Connery. That was OK.

Landsknecht-turned-executioner. Flesh and Blood with Rutger Hauer is also a "medieval movie" many people rate pretty good.
    This one is excellent

-The Name of the Rose ***

    -Kingdom of Heaven **

    -Excalibur ***

Robin Hood (2x) but both are meuuuh

Le Retour de Martin Guerre (french film). No fights no military but the story was interesting and medieval way of life was pretty well shown

    The vikings **

    Vahlalha Rising **

"Definitely"? I beg your pardon Mr. Newworld but there isn't an exact "year of death" for the middle ages. Especially since it "lasted longer" in some nations than it did in others (i.e. the transition period marked by the extinction of old forms of government, adoption of new technologies etc).
1499 in Austria wasn't that country's early modern period.

I forgot to mention The Pillars of the Earth. It's a mini series adaption from the Ken Follet's novels... too much cliché as far as I'm concerned but somewhat entertaining regardless.

Fair enough. I have just always associated the Lansknecht concept with the renaissance era. 1499 is a little early though I agree.

Agreed. It's some pretentious arthouse movie thing. Give this one a miss if you're not into "Jim Jarmusch in bloodlust" flicks.

No worries mate. I was just making digs at you.

Another recommendation: King Arthur with Clive Owen. It's about as historically accurate as U571, but a nice movie nonetheless. Technically speaking its not set in medieval times but it sure looks as if it were.
