Of course. But, there is a problem. Who's going to rule after Lukashenko/Putin is gone? Democracy in Western sense doesn't grow on trees, it can't just appear out of nowhere in a country with no culture/tradition of "Western Values".

Particularly when the government arrests and jails those who dare demand it, no?

I am using an example. I don't think I ever Defended Lukashenko in any bit, I did mention about having one effective party vs two.

I do not know many countries which are a direct democracy. Most of Europe are still monarchies and have a central national symbol, despite having a parliament. United States is an elitist electoral-based 2 party system (Russia has 4 major parties in Parliament)...

practice what you preach. Also, democracy is not some axiom that transcends into stability and prosperity.
