Timetraveller is that you?
If people who live under authoritarian or dictatorial rule ask people from democratic nations why they criticize their governments I'd reckon they're either dim-witted or paid by aforesaid governments.
FYI, he's not American. But if you like hard dates, you could say our democratic values (note, not democracy. I know that distinction is probably going to confuse the Hell out of you) go back to 1781 with the ratification of the Articles of Confederation. Or you could argue that it goes back even farther with our shared heritage with the UK.
No. America did have real democracy until late 1960s, after the civil rights movement, when African-Americans had less fear for their lives when they voted. Ironically, the arrival of some assemblance to democracy coincided with the starting of decline of the U.S. As for the concept of democracy, it started about 2,500 years ago in Greece, while more than 90 percent of the population was slaves. Isn't it even more ironical?
Did I understand correctly -- the civil rights movement led to a decline of democracy in the United States? What the heck is that supposed to mean? Also, what was that about Greece and slavery?
China is no threat to America, those who are only bluffing or creating "Cold War" scare on purpose. I know China is a actually a very backward society compared to America, not technoloically or military hardware but also people's way of thinking and how things are done. China will not catch up with America at least for a long time they is no need to be afraid.
Where is the irony? Democracy means the power of the citizenry, the demos. That was not to mean (nor does it now) that anyone living in the city or country was part of the demos. It is through a gradual evolution that Western nations broadened the base of the demos to the point every national was a part of the citizen body. The Magna Carta Libertatum, the Bill of Rights, the Déclaration Universelle des Droits de l'Homme are all milestones of this process that give citizens certain rights to influence the course of the city/nation, and to defend upon the power of the ruling body.
Wat ? Sorry, my sense of perception is confused by this sentence...America did have real democracy until late 1960s, after the civil rights movement, when African-Americans had less fear for their lives when they voted.
So you're saying the Civil Rights movement was a mistake on our part?
Huh? Seriously, you need a better translator program.
What does that have to do with us? The US is not a democracy, and if anything we have more of a connection to Rome than the ancient Greeks.
We do have democratic values, ie voting, but we are a Constitutional Republic. I don't know why I'm trying to explain this to you since you won't understand it, but democracy involves direct participation of the citizenry in decision making, while in a republic the citizenry vote for representatives who act and make decisions on our behalf.
Leave China ALOOOOOOOOONE!!!!
