US says has 'eyes' inside Iran nuclear program

In remarks seemingly directed at Israel, Washington asserts it would know once Iran acquired the knowledge, capability and materials to build nuclear bomb; former CIA official suggests Obama may accept nuclear Iran

    Yizhak Benhorin, AFP

    (…)

White House spokesman Jay Carney declined to comment on intelligence matters but said that Washington and Israel were agreed about Iran's ambitions for its nuclear program.
"I would also say that we have eyes – we have visibility into the program, and we would know if and when Iran made what's called a breakout move towards acquiring a weapon."
Breakout capability is commonly understood to be the point when a state acquires the knowledge, capability and materials to build a nuclear bomb if it wants to.
Carney said later in his briefing that he was referring to International Atomic Energy Agency officials mandated to inspect Iran's nuclear sites because Tehran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

    (…)

State officials noted that despite its apparent wariness towards the military option, the US continues to deploy forces – including aircraft carriers and minesweepers – to the Persian Gulf.

"They are quietly signaling that Washington is serious in its intention to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear power," one source said.
But a former White House adviser for Middle East affairs said that President Barack Obama may be ready to accept a nulcear Iran.

Bruce Reidel, a former CIA official and senior adviser to three US presidents – including George W. Bush – told Ynet on Friday that Israel's prime opportunity to strike Iran is coming up in October – only weeks before the presidential elections take place in the US.
If Obama is reelected in November, it would be much more difficult to convince him that a strike is the best course of action. In fact, Reidel postulated that a second Obama Administration could opt to adopt a policy of "containment," or in other words make peace with the possibility that Iran will obtain nuclear power.
An October strike is Obama's "worst nightmare," Reidel said, anticipating that top US officials will travel to Israel prior to the elections in an attempt to dissuade its leaders from launching a strike and to buy time for the incumbent president, who may not be ready to employ the military option in the next six months, if at all.

Haaretz isn't usually a good source for US-generated information. Dis-information for that matter, either.

The latest out of America is that things are as they have been - no new developments.

On the other hand, Ben Netanyahu is reported, by Haaretz, to be making his 'final' decision about bombing the nukuler terrorists..

They've just had a massive earthquake, so to-day would be a good day to catch them with their ER's busy.
Mos def' before the US election in November so Barry O. can demonstrate leadership by stopping the mullahs' revenge.

US didn’t foresee 9/11, officials in Jerusalem say, after White House claims it would know if Iran was about to get the bomb

Withering response from anonymous sources in Israel to Obama spokesman’s attempt at reassurance

Agreed. a nuclear armed iran is a great threat and considering all the terrorist groups their country supports, there is no telling what they would do with nuclear weapons. Who would they sell them to? would they arm terrorist with nuclear weapons? when would they use them and on who? they would definitely use them against us considering the fact that they think we are so evil for some reason...also considering all the anti-american rallies and propaganda they spread amongst their people.

Israeli official: Iran has made progress toward nuclear warhead

The new intelligence was introduced as a last-minute update to the special National Intelligence Estimate on the Iranian nuclear program that was submitted to U.S. President Barack Obama a week ago.

    By Barak Ravid

As the dispute between Israel and the Obama administration over how to address the Iranian nuclear threat rages, a senior Jerusalem official has said Iran has made significant progress in assembling a nuclear warhead.

The official, who asked to remain anonymous, said new intelligence obtained by the United States, Israel and other Western countries shows that the Iranian activity around the "weapon group" - the final stage in the development of a nuclear weapon - is progressing far beyond the scope known to the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The new intelligence was introduced as a last-minute update to the special National Intelligence Estimate on the Iranian nuclear program that was submitted to U.S. President Barack Obama a week ago.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak, in an interview with Israel Radio on Thursday, confirmed the report's existence and said its intelligence made taking action on Iran "more urgent."

The Iranians' greatest progress recently is in the manufacture and assembly of a nuclear warhead. Iran's Shahab-3 missile has a range of 1,500 kilometers, allowing it to hit any part of Israel. Meanwhile, Iranian engineers are working to develop other components including a nuclear fuse and detonators.

    (…)

This week the Obama administration will hold talks with representatives of some of the countries of the international group on Iran's nuclear program. The head of the U.S. negotiating team, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, will go to Beijing, Moscow and London this week, in part in an effort to unstick the negotiations with Iran.

He's already accepted a nuclear Iran. If anything happens before November he can blame it on Isreal.

I dont believe iran are able to make a proper, working bomb. they simply lack the expertise/experience/resources for it.

But israels fear of it is quite funny. If you want to be the leading country in a region, you must lead by example. You cant have nukes and expect your hostile neighbors to not want any themselves.

Funny? I don't find it "funny" at all and I can only imagine what Israelis feel.

I bet you would have said the same about Pakistan 20 years ago.

Israel doesn't wish to be a "leading country in the region" nor does it wish to "lead by example".

Israel wishes to survive and ensure its security.

have you ever heard the saying "never underestimate your enemy"?....and there's a difference between a peaceful nuclear armed country and a country that harbors terrorist being nuclear armed. Nobody leads their enemies by example.
