Default UN urges US to cut ethanol production

The UN has called for an immediate suspension of government-mandated US ethanol production, adding to pressure on Barack Obama to address the food-versus-fuel debate in the run-up to presidential elections.

Most US ethanol is made from corn. The dispute over ethanol promotion pits states such as Iowa that benefit from higher corn prices -- and in some cases are swing states in the election -- against livestock-raising states such as Texas that are helped by lower corn prices.

The UN intervention will be seized upon by state governors, lawmakers and the meat and livestock industry, who have expressed alarm at surging prices for corn. Members of the Group of 20 leading economies -- including France, India and China -- have already expressed concern about the US ethanol policy.

The US is poised to divert around 40 per cent of its corn into ethanol because of the Congress-enacted mandate despite "huge damage" to the crop because of the worst drought in at least half a century, José Graziano da Silva, director-general of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, warned.

We can't cut it. It's green, eco-free, carbon credits and all that. And think of the children.

NCs corn production is doing great. We are getting an abundance of rain. These prices still won't offset the losses from previous years of drought. It helps though.

It will be hard as ethanol producers have benefitted from protective tariffs since the 1980's and a credits since 2004 but it could save $ billions.

It's never made sense to me. Millions of people starving around the world and we make gasoline out of corn.

Millions of people would still be starving around the world if the USA made no Ethanol. Corrupt third world hellholes where the gov steals from the people or terrorizes them uses food as a weapon against tribes they dont like, places where you wont kill a rat eating your grain for religious reasons while quality protein wanders around, but lets blame it on the "Muricans.

E10 is great stuff IMO. Engines stay cleaner (less carbon and such) and ethanol is a pretty good octane increaser. Here in AU E10 is a few cents cheaper than 'normal' 91octane cats pi$$. I tuned the old Falcon to run on it, it's great! E85 is even better, especially if you are running forced induction.
