Default Virgin's Unaccompanied Minor Policy Under Fire

A number of Australian airlines, including Virgin, have implemented a policy that prevents male passengers from being seated next to unaccompanied minors.

This all came to light earlier this week when a Virgin customer, who was asked to move away from two unaccompanied minors, objected to the insinuation that he might be a danger to children simply because he was male.

I usually consider myself a fair and reasonable person, who don't get offended easily.

But this really make my blood boil, and frankly makes me very sad to read.

I work part time as a substitute teacher and sometimes in their "After school kindergarden" and I LOVE children (not in that way hehe)
I'm always the one interacting, helping and encouraging them. At family party's I'm always the "horsy" who run around and play with my smaller cousins all day/evening long. While all the others get drunk and stupid.

And I would never lay my hand on a child. Yes most men would probably be happy to not be seated next to a child, but thats not the point. The friggin point is that they basically go out and tell, that males = pedophiles and child molestors :S

I hope they abolish this sexist, discriminating and very offensive policy!

I can understand the policy somewhat.

Mr McGirr said the attendant then asked a fellow female passenger, "Can you please sit in this seat because he is not allowed to sit next to minors."

But this I hope the man sues the company.

I would have walked out the airplane, out of the emergency exit if I had to. And demanded to be booked on another carrier. Call me ridiculous, but I'm very touchy at that subject

I was reading the John Lewis employees handbook once (I was bored in my ex's car and it was the only thing to read). Under the section on lost children it gave the usual things to do, stay with them, take them to the service desk, put a call out, ask if they have a phone or know their guardians number etc. Then it said "Male employees should seek the assistance of a female in this matter".

On the one hand I can see the the logic behind the policy and it's for the guys protection as much as it is the childs, on the other hand it's a terrible thing that such a policy is even vaguely necessary.

True, it's terrible that such policies are in place. Thankfully I haven't come across this in Denmark so far, hopefully never will.

I am trying to remember how I thought at the age of 7-8. I think it was easier for me to accepted help from a stranger female than a stranger male. Now, as a grown male, I would not like to be sited next to a child on an airplane (they squirm to much in their seats and have no quiet voice). But I agree with Fallap, equating males with pedophiles and child molesters is nonsense.

P.S.> I love my nephews and the fact that you need to make a joke "(not in that way hehe)" after a statements like this just to alleviate the social discomfort or preemptive some bad joke shows how far we let this <males=pedophiles just to be sure> nonsense go.

I agree that for a child, it may be a bit more comfortable being in the hands of a woman. I think it boils down to when we were inside our mother's stomach for nine month. And that she was the first we ever saw when we came out.

But I remember as a child, to be just as able to "connect" with an adult male as a female.

It's VERY important for young boys, to have a male rolemodel, who can play games, soccer, and other "boy-stuff" (Yes stereotype! sorry) And have one who says: "Up again, that don't look so bad! Now run out and play again!" instead of "uuuh oooh nooo! Call 911! My poor baby, never run around again bla bla bla" - nonsense, which I've sadly seen to much of from my opposite séx.

Correct, I'm not a 100% sure why I felt the urge to put that joke in there. And yes it's sad, I'll stop doing it from now on.

How old are you nephews btw?

I can't believe parents would send their child half way around the world unaccompanied.

It totally depends on the situation. They're probably only unaccompanied on the flight and will be collected on arrival by some form of guardian.

This, and this policy is extremely retarded. Presumption of innocence, anyone?
Besides, two in ten child molesters are female. Why may a woman sit next to an unaccompanied minor then if she's able to pose a threat to their bodily integrity just as well? Why not cordon off the entire row and, optimally, the rows in front and behind too?
