Default US Navy Ship Collides With Oil Tanker in Gulf

"US Navy Ship Collides With Oil Tanker in Gulf"

One of the U.S. Navy's guided-missile destroyers suffered minor damage when it collided with an oil tanker early Sunday just outside the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The collision left a gaping hole in the starboard side of USS Porter but no one was injured on either vessel, the U.S. Navy said in a statement. The collision with the Panamanian-flagged bulk oil tanker M/V Otowasan occurred at approximately 1 a.m. local time.

Maybe the fact that a tanker, filled at 95% capacity, isn't very manoeuvrable has something to do with it? But best to wait for the outcome of the investigation. At least no injuries or spillage has been reported sofar.

    ouch

Ship to ship collisions happens often, but as long as no passengerships are involved it hardly gets any notice. There could be a myriad of reasons why it happened.

I know that this straight is small, but not THAT small. Or was this some evil plan to block the straight?

Mass x velocity = momentum. Object A vs object B, two bodies interact by exerting force on each other, these forces (termed the action and the reaction) are equal in magnitude, but opposite in direction. It's physics, time hasn't really changed the laws of this in recent history or anything But I'll be sure to keep you posted if this does change.

Anyway, luckily no one was hurt. Gonna take at least a coat of haze-grey paint to cover up that scar...

I remember an advert like that. Cant find it though.

But i could find this one:

    EDIT: Found it

This is the transcript of the ACTUAL radio
conversation of a U.S. naval ship with the Canadian
authorities off the coast of Newfoundland October
1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of
    Naval Operations10-10-95.

    Canadians:
Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South
    to avoid a collision.

    Americans:
Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the
    North.

    Canadians:
Negative. You will have to divert your course 15
degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

    Americans:
This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again,
    divert YOUR course.

    Canadians:
No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

    Americans:
THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN. THE
SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC
FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE
CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT
YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, I SAY
AGAIN,THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER
MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF
    THIS SHIP.

    Canadians:
We are a lighthouse, your call.
