Default Can the M9 be privately owned in America

I am told that M9 is only available for the US military and civilians can only buy the M92f. Is the M9 available for civilian market at all?

You can buy a civilian version of the M9 that is "marked" M9. It has the same capacity (15+1) but sights are a little different. They retail for about $585.00

As far as I know there hasnt been any 'surplus' government owned M9s sold on the market, but this has happened in the past with .38s, 1911s, and others. However you do find massive lots of magazines (used and new), grips, and components at DRMO auctions from time to time...just not frames or complete guns.

Now Beretta USA will sell you a dead ringer M92A1 which is about 99% the same thing

It just isnt 100% the same thing. (No US Property markings, etc)

My bad, the 92FS is the civilian M9 (all the same but with slightly different sights and no us markings et al) .....the M92A1 has a rail.

    Here you go.

Yeah, mine is a Beretta model 92FS 9mm, and mine was made in Italy...I bought it July 14, 1990 for $519.54. They had just started making the same model in the USA beretta factory at the time and I had a choice (Italian or US made), but silly me, I believed the Italian made weapon would become scarce in the USA market since they were making them here in the USA so I opted for the Italian made firearm. Still it is a fine weapon, and I have used it to qualify each time for my concealed carry permit in timed shoots over the last 17 or so years. very safe and accurate firearm, IMO.

I have a Taurus knockoff, the "Brazilian Beretta". Nice pistol. Still prefer my Sig P220. For revolvers, S+W 686 .357. Among others.

As everyone said you can get 92FS, which is pretty much the same thing. However, I feel like they are too big for 9mm and too heavy, why would you want one? You can buy a much better pistol legally in most states.

Also, the double-action on the first shot and single action of every shot afterwards is weird and usually throws off my follow up shot. You could technically dec0ck it, but you once you engage the safety, it unc0cks.

Mine is an Italian 92FS as well. I bought it a few nonths ago after I reenlisted for the sale price of $569.99 (That's a sale??) I bought it mainly out of nostalgia, and to maintain familiarity. Until then, I had no idea what a new M9 was like lol: Everything was tight, no rattle. The unfired barrel had rifling... I still prefer my Glock 17 and 19 as fightin' pistols, though.

The commercial M9 is the same as the Military issue. I have worked on hundreds of Mil M9's as a Depot level Armorer, and own a few of the civilian M9/M9A1, they are the same gun inside and out. So yes, for all intents and purposes, you can own the same gun as the military, marked M9.

I bought a 92FS for training purposes, since I am issued an M9. Aside from that I don't really see why anyone would want to buy one, there are much better choices available.

To answer the OP's question, Beretta has a "M9 Commercial" model, which is identical to the issued pistol (to include the sights). http://www.berettausa.com/products/m...ial-9mm-15rds/
