    Default Gun Val Program

What did this program actually achieve during the Korean War when a number of F-86F's were fitted with four 20mm cannons instead of the standard ..six 50 caliber's ..

Was 4 better than 6 Operational wise in terms of bullet usage ??

It was done probably to appease European customers more than anything else. By the time 20mm were being fitted this jet was looking to be replaced by the F100 and a bunch of other designs.

GUNVAL was more useful in helping the USAF deal with gas ingestion problems (which other countries also experienced with early jet fighters - -MiGs included) than in terms of actual combat value. The T160 cannon became the M39 and has been used successfully up until today.

USAF pilots had complained that .50s didn't have the destructive power needed to reliably knock down MiGs.
