Default Equal sales of AKs to US civilians and Russian Army.

American civilians buy as many AK47s as the Russian military and police... and demand is surging because gun owners fear they will be banned

American civilians are buying as many AK47s from Russia's top armory as the Russian military and police.

The surge in sales of Russian assault rifles and shotguns are fuelled by firearms enthusiasts who are paranoid about the weapons being banned in the United States.

The semiautomatic weapons, fitted with high-capacity magazines, are manufactured at Izhevsk Machinebuilding Plant, Russia's primary small arms factory.

They are built alongside the fully-automatic military versions that are used by armies, militias and terrorists around the world.

In the United States, they have become immensely popular. Among hunters, recreational shooters and survivalists, they are known for being extremely reliable and relatively inexpensive -- and they fire powerful ammunition that is cheap and plentiful.

The New York Times reports that the Izhevsk factory is relying on sales of their military-style weapons to American consumers to help support the modernization and re-arming of the Russian military.

Currently, 70 percent of the factory's production goes to civilian weapons sales -- up from 50 percent two years ago.

About 40 percent of all civilian weapons go to the United States.

This mean, the Times reports, that Izhevesk sells as many guns to American shooters and it does to Russian police officers and soldiers.

Didn't know Izhevsk was still making 'AK-47's,

But damn straight, that's pretty impressive. Also can't beat this: "known for being extremely reliable and relatively inexpensive -- and they fire powerful ammunition that is cheap and plentiful."

This a sad statement of affairs in my country. I never thought I would see the day when sales of these weapons would be equal with the Russian army. I hate ties. Time to buy up.

Considering Russia is both awash in AK Variants and that standards for most agencies has moved to AK-74M and variants of the 74 this neither surprises nor is really big news in the comparative sense
Hell the Russian Army announced it no longer was procuring AK-74 variants en masse anymore only recently let alone AK-47 variants making this even less of a comparison.....

What is more interesting is how much Americans seem to be stocking up for which I think we can find better sources likely than the Daily Mail

Lets be honest here. They're journalists. They don't know the difference between an RPK, an AK-47, an AK-74, or any other AK variant....

I'm also part of that statistic if they include last year,

A 12 year old with a hammer and one eye in some ****ty little afghan village is assembling an AK older than yours, and in worse shape.

Coyotes, man. I've known more than a few farmers to pack them (or SKSs, mini-14s, ARs, Valmet M62s, CETMEs, or whatever fun-fun-shooty-fun black rifle) in the cabs of tractors.
