USS CARR, At Sea (Aug. 16, 2012) - The guided missile frigate USS Carr (FFG 52), not shown, receives mission-essential parts from a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol P-3 Orion patrol aircraft while supporting Operation Martillo Aug. 15, 2012, in the Caribbean Sea. During the exchange, Carr's embarked SH-60B Seahawk helicopter identified a suspect vessel over the horizon. A U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement detachment boarded the vessel and seized 1,250 pounds of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $17 million. Operation Martillo is a joint, interagency and multinational collaborative effort to deny transnational criminal organizations air and maritime access to the littoral regions of the Central American isthmus. EASTERN SAN DIEGO COUNTY (Aug. 16, 2012) - Two MH-60S helicopters from Navy Helicopter Sea Combat squadrons THREE (HSC-3) and TWO-ONE (HSC-21) prepare to conduct a water drop to combat a wildfire. HSC-3 and HSC-21 are assisting CALFIRE by providing aircrews flying specially-equipped MH-60S helicopters to conduct aerial water drops against several wildfires in eastern San Diego County. San Diego HSC squadrons are trained for fire-fighting missions at the Navy's Southern California offshore training ranges and conduct semi-annual joint training with CALFIRE to ensure interoperability and an immediate response capability in support of local authorities for emergency events.
