Truly an amazing aircraft. Saw a documentary on the ME109 and the US mustang the other day, the ME109 was about 4,000 lbs lighter than the Mustang. The ME109 had a very tight fiting cockpit, so the pilot would not get tossed around inside the cockpit in flight (making it difficult to enter the cockpit) and the 109 had the landing wheels mounted from the fuselage, not the wings to save on weight of steel going out into the wings, also it did not carry fuel in the wings.

The Me-109 was lighter than the P-51, but it also had less than half the range of the P-51. Different compromises have different costs.
