I knew a English teacher who literally only made her kids work because she was required to, and her assignments were so pathetic that a monkey could do them with ease.

It was all kinda sad really. The educational system really is a joke.
I agree. I found this out myself that I and most others really care about our academics towards our Junior and Senior year of college if we go.

You probably heard the expression, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can not make him drink." Over simplifying the problems of our education system is all to common, look at some of the comments here.

Education is based on the students willingness to learn. Teachers can not do what parents needed to do, teachers can not do what the student needs to do etc. Often they are respondents to current situation.

Google Lane Tech in Chicago. They make the same boast today that they did when I went there, 90% of those who graduated from Lane, will also graduate from 4 yrs of College. They also boast that among all the high schools in the US, they have highest number of alumni with PhDs.

More than 90 percent of students earn college degrees in fields such as architecture, engineering, medicine, mathematics, science, journalism, accounting, music, art, and teaching............... More Ph.D's have graduated from Lane than any other high school in the nation.
So why is this one school, it's teachers, it's students, etc............ can make these claims and your high school can not?

It is too common today, people blame other peoples or credit them, for their own failures/problems.

As long as we have the quality of politicians today, tomorrow we will not see any changes. Look at all the problems in the US today, Immigration, Unemployment, Debt, etc.......... There are real solutions but do you notice, the issue that is being discussed publicly is broken down to over simplified black and white sound bites that do not address the real issues that needs to be fixed.

To achieve a decent education system you need, 1) Parents, 2) students, 3) community working together. If you notice, I did not mention teachers.

damn right. the schools in my area are some of the best in the state but we are in the middle of nowhere with minimal support except a bit from the local naval base (they allow for researchers, who are also the parents, to come out to the schools and do presentations and the like). it's the damn parents making time and doing the crap parents are supposed to be doing. I have heard the teachers here called below average plenty of times, and yet the students still do very well.

What you need are teachers actually trained in what they teach. By that i mean mathematics teachers need to have advanced mathematics degrees. same with history etc. Giving 'teaching certificate' to some bit with a Liberal arts degree and expecting them to teach multiple subjects is the height of banality.

/had a history teacher who didnt know history
/math teacher whose degree was in nutrition
//science teacher who was the gym coach
