Three New Zealanders from PRT Bamiyan killed by IED.
The Taleban has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack that killed three New Zealand soldiers only two weeks after the deaths of Lance Corporals Rory Malone and Pralli Durrer in a firefight. The Defence Force said that at approximately 9.20am (Afghanistan time) yesterday, the last vehicle in a convoy was hit by an improvised explosive device, North West of Do Abe, Bamiyan, on the road to Romero.
Aye, and IMHO they're the ones having to have to pay for a shytty Hungarian approach to running a PRT and fighting an insurgency, something the article above more than hints at. And that's coming from someone who's actually spent some time in PRT Pol-e-Khumri and experienced firsthand the Hungarian way of working the place.
Decent and motivated soldiers on the ground, especially the mission-teams i worked with back then, but it sort of stops there... a real shame IMHO.
In any case, five Kiwis dead in less than a month is a real bad number. Taking on responsibility for operations in Baghlan with such a small contingent could well be more than a mouthful, that AO is a real mess, and was starting to become a mess even back in 2006 when i spent some time around those parts. Gutsy on the Kiwis for sure, i'm guessing ALOT of frustration over inaction from certain others was what led New Zealand to take on this addition to AO.
