Okay, just to clear things up before before this discussion become cyclic: what is the old-fashioned definition of "legitimate rape" as opposed to "illegitimate(?) rape" then?

    @IraGlacialis
"Legitimate" most likely means when the offender can "legitimately" and from every viewpoint be accused of raping the victim.
It's an awefully repulsive statement since it suggests every rape victim who got pregnant secretly wanted "it" or that she even brought forward false accusations against the "father".
Wouldn't be too surprised if the dear Mr. Akin was one of them poorly-endowed jerks who run their mouth on marital duties and whatnot.

@IraGlacialis - you might be thinking of this (from 2011)

    H.R.3
    - No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act

'(1) if the pregnancy occurred because the pregnant female was the subject of an act of forcible rape or, if a minor, an act of incest; or

And as always he got some bigots supporting him ...

“Missouri Right to Life supports Congressman Akin’s defense of the life of an innocent unborn child conceived by rape,” Pam Fichter, the organization’s president said, according to the Kansas City Star. “Victims of ****** assault deserve a compassionate response and should not be further victimized by abortion.
Susan B. Anthony List, a national organization that promotes pro-life politicians, also lent him some encouraging words.
“Congressman Akin, a longtime pro-life leader, has said he had misspoken, and no one is arguing that rape is anything but a despicable, horrible crime,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, the group’s president, said in a statement. “Abortion supporters like Sen. Claire McCaskill are trying to use this issue as a smokescreen to hide from their radical, pro-abortion records that are out of step with the majority of Missourians and the American people.

In the end, it doesn't matter whether it was the old or new version of the term utilized, the sheer fact that Akin tried to use that argument, then proceeded to backpedal without a firm apology is reprehensible enough.

Not sure about martial duties, but it seems that he has to somehow interject God into most of his campaigns.

There was a famous anti-abortionist from some New England state - can't seem to remember the name right now - who said rape could not occur in marriage since the wife was supposed to "attend to her marital duties" anyway. That's why I made that remark. Alas, it matters not.

My issue with this clown is that he knows he didn't "misspeak". He meant exactly what he said, he is a true believer and his policy decisions would most certainly reflect his narrow minded and ridiculously ignorant world view.

Yes, as we communicate, he is stepping down now that the whole of the GOP is putting pressure on him.
    He blew it.

Amen - not even an honest up front believer - I know several (Catholic) who are unabashed that a pregnancy is a kid therefore abortion is murder. It is a dishonest (self deluding ?) set that try to say don't worry about rape victims, LEGITIMATE rape doesn't result in pregnancy.

The guy's toast. The Republicans are going to pull his funding if he doesn't step down, according to Fox News.

I hope he stays in the race. Some groups (Susan B. Anthony something, and Family Research Council) have come to his defense.

However, one of the nation's most prominent conservative organizations rallied to Akin's defense. Top officials from the Family Research Council said Akin is the target of a Democratic smear campaign, and they also chided Republicans calling for him to step down.
Connie Mackey, who heads the group's political action committee, said the organization "strongly supports" Akin.
"Todd Akin is getting a really bad break here," Mackey told reporters. "I don't know anything about the science or the legal implications of his statement. I do know politics, and I know 'gotcha' politics when I see it."
Stay in there Todd. Christine O'Donnell didn't give up. Sharron Angle didn't give up. Neither should you.

I'm going to bet he won't stay in, for the parties sake. Claire wants him to stay in (Obviously). Mitt will call him soon and he will drop out. He's probably already in the process of stepping down.

As much as I'd like him to stay in and win its not going to happen. Politician 1 comes out and says something silly, then a week later Politician 2 comes out and says something more outrageous thus swinging peoples opinion. It would be such a shocker to Claire if he won by a large margin - would be a great example of voters coming out and saying "the real issue is the economy, spending, and jobs not this stupid sh!t".

Suddenly abortion is back in the spotlight/election issue. Sadly it's really not an issue nor should it be considering our economic situation.
