Same in the UK. If you walk into the recruiting office with those sort of tattoos, you'll be shown the door and told not to come back unless they're removed.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...f-tattoos.htmlItaly's soldiers have been told to get rid of their tattoos – especially those that are sexist, racist or espouse support for neo-fascist parties.
Tattoos in "visible parts of the body" have been prohibited under newly-released regulations.
Body piercings are to be banned outright, no matter where they are on the body.
The army takes a dim view of tattoos that are obscene, racist, anti-Semitic or demeaning to women.
Army chiefs are particularly concerned with tattoos that proclaim allegiance to parties on the far-Right of the political spectrum.
Such body markings could damage the image of the Italian military, they said.
"They can bring discredit to the institutions of the Republic and to the armed forces," the army said in a statement.
Provocative tattoos could also cause problems and misunderstandings in countries where they are disapproved for "religious or cultural reasons", the army said.
Italy has been one of the largest European contributors to the Nato-led force in Afghanistan and also has peacekeepers in Lebanon and the Balkans.
Stupid stupid stupid...
They will change their mind when recruitement will fall ridiculously low...If they do the same in France, me and some friends are pretty ****ed up
I read it was the same **** too in USA. What about in practice ?

that seems fair.
i was not stupid enough to have any below the elbow(for short sleeve order),but i have a eye on each arse cheek..tattoos when drunk are not good idea
Bad wording. Get rid of tattoos, "especially" certain ones?
They're either told to get rid of ALL tattoos which is asinine or told to get rid of racist and obscene tattoos which is just common sense for a military in todays day and age.
^^ good point,ok fair enough if when they through to door the rule apply's,but its expensive to have these removed,& i should imagine its mainly older troops who would have say a naked woman on his fore-arm<example...
@happy i know where u coming from mate, but i think they saying those already serving?..imagine ure lot of older seadogs
Ditto. I love ink, and have 13 total. However, none of mine are visible while in uniform or professional civvie attire. With the exception of the newest on my calf, none were visible in my "summer beach bum" attire of shorts, flip flops and t-shirts until I hit the beach, or pool and off comes the shirt.
Well, actually this rule was well established since, like, forever.
Tattoos of any racist, anti-establishment, prejudicial or obscene nature are obvious non-starters. Thanks for stopping by, shut the door on the way out and don't come back.
Personally, I think this sudden aversion to visible tattoos otherwise compliant with good order and conduct and in many cases military tradition are absurd. Has anyone in the military noticed tattoos are more and more common and accepted in every facet of modern society? So why the sudden clamp down?
Well that some have such tatoos on visible parts of the body is already a sign of their stupidiy. So I believe not much of value is lost here.
I remember being in Italy a few years ago and I was shocked by the amount of fascist tattoos on soldier and carabinieri. Everything from SS runes, El Duce, fascas, Italian SS crests, etc.
Most armies have policies on visible tattoos, but once you're in and you get the ink done -as long as it isn't racist, sexist, etc - then it's pretty hard to clamp down on it.
Marine Corps went insane, if you have tattoos that are past your upper bicep it's a huge ordeal and you need waivers. I was at MEPs with a guy who had out and see a high-ranker for it to get approved. Navy takes photos of all the tattoos and you need waivers for certain ones. Army looked right at my wrist tattoo and said "Oh, it's not on your hand, you're good!"
Hello there, first off you can go **** off with those sentiments! Second off, having tattoos does not make someone "valueless", voicing idiotic beliefs does.
If they tried to ban tattoos in our Army, our Union would have a field day!
At one point people were enlisting with wavors for drunk driving but stonewalled for tattoos. WTH kind of sense does tat make?
Easy there haws...I almost sad the same exact thing but I think he might mean the guys with the racist tats refered to in the article.
