Default General Dempsey's Plane damaged by indirect fire while on the ground at Bagram.

Afghan militants hit US military chief's plane

KABUL, Afghanistan — Insurgents fired rockets into an American base in Afghanistan early Tuesday, damaging the parked plane of the visiting chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, the U.S. military said.

The general was safe in his quarters at the time and later left the country aboard another aircraft.
The Taliban were quick to claim the rocket strike that hit the C-17 military transport plane of U.S. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey as another propaganda coup. The militants also have said their fighters shot down a U.S. helicopter that crashed last week, killing seven Americans, though U.S. officials cast doubt on both insurgent claims.

I initially thought the plane was hit while flying. Glad to see everyone is ok.

No one was in it. That looks more like a failure than a coup to anyone with eyes.

I bet to the Taliban it doesn't. And now this little press report just gave the Muj a nice BDA.

The first place I saw it was on the ISAF website but I don't know if it was reported in the press first and then confirmed by ISAF or released by ISAF to the press.

TALIBAN is getting bolder by the day. Despite of all these killings of their "second in command"

Just a lucky hit, they could just as easily have hit a ****ter.
Speedy recovery too the two aircraft maintenance workers .

Sad that security is at that level where one of your major airfields is getting indirect fires from an area that is supposedly "under control". The fact that it was the general's ride is inconsequential. Pretty sobering event. Speedy recovery to the two injured service members.

The Muj have been hitting that airport for over two decades now with shitty 107mm Chinese made rockets. There is no security from this kind of attack. Hell, the CIA gave them diagrams to set the ranges on Bagram in the 80's.

Exactly, after all this time, and with all the tech and troops it's still insurmountable.

I think you would have to run patrols constantly around potential launch sites opening your people up to ambush and such. The Russians never solved the problem, I don't think ISAF will either, especially with the clock running out on the party.

the Taliban have been firing RPG at bases for over 10 years - they were bound to hit something someday.

what they hit was an empty plane - no general was in it.

    a sensationalist article at best.

****ing Katyusha rockets, lucky if they hit the grid they're aimed at . they were probably aiming at the PX and hit the runway instead. On the other hand what does Dempsey need his own C-17 for? I was under the impression thats why the services have those small VIP jets.
