    JHMCS in action

    Hi-Res

Indian Ocean (Apr. 4, 2003) -- An F/A-18E Super Hornet assigned to the “Top Hatters” of Strike Fighter Squadron Fourteen (VFA-14) prepares for its next mission the flight deck aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Nimitz and Carrier Air Wing Eleven (CVW-11) are expected to join coalition forces supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

First used in Operation Iraqi Freedom, JHMCS gives pilots the ability to rapidly acquire and designate a target simply by looking at it. By putting an aiming cross, which is projected on the helmet visor, over the desired target and pressing a button, the pilot can quickly and easily aim the weapons and sensors to designate and attack airborne or ground targets. This not only makes the pilot and aircraft more lethal, but it also makes them more survivable because it reduces the time the pilot and aircraft are exposed to potential enemy fire. JHMCS also displays aircraft altitude, airspeed, g's and angle of attack on the visor, as well as tactical information, to increase the pilot's awareness of the state of his aircraft and the combat situation.

Gulf of Alaska (Jun. 14, 2004) - Airman Apprentice Kaisa Clark, of Page Ariz., cleans an AIM-9X Sidewinder Air-to-Air Missile in the "Bomb Farm" on the flight deck aboard Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74).

The AIM-9X is an advanced short-range dogfight weapon that can intercept airborne targets located at high off-boresight lines-of-sight relative to the shooter, providing a weapon with a short-range intercept envelope significantly larger than any air-to-air weapon in use today.

The HOBS system (the combination of JHMCS & AIM-9X) results in a weapon that can attack and destroy nearly any airborne enemy seen by the pilot. Additionally, this weapon can be employed without maneuvering the aircraft, minimizing the time spent in the threat environment. The result is greater lethality, survivability, and pilot situational awareness during air combat.

The AIM-9X is a joint U.S. Navy and Air Force program, with the Navy designated as the lead service.

    Nice!

Saw a while ago, that one or a few AF squadrons were getting fielded the JHMCS. Good to see it and the AIM-9X's finding their way on to Navy birds. Will all Navy/Marine Corps F/A-18's get it eventually, or is it just a Navy/Air Force project?

    Edit: Nevermind, found my answer
