Unhappy 40% of U.S. food wasted, report says

Forty percent of food in the United States is never eaten, amounting to $165 billion a year in waste, taking a toll on the country's water resources and significantly increasing greenhouse gas emissions, according to a report from the Natural Resources Defense Council released this week.

The group says more than 20 pounds of food is wasted each month for each of 311 million Americans, amounting to $1,350 to $2,275 annually in waste for a family of four. Think of it as dumping 80 quarter-pound hamburger patties in the garbage each month, or chucking two dozen boxes of breakfast cereal into the trash bin rather than putting them in your pantry.

The report points out waste in all areas of the U.S. food supply chain, from field to plate, from farms to warehouses, from buffets to school cafeterias.

"Food is simply too good to waste," the report says. "Given all the resources demanded for food production, it is critical to make sure that the least amount possible is needlessly squandered on its journey to our plates."

Most of the waste comes in the home, the report says.

"American families throw out approximately 25% of the food and beverages they buy," the report says. It cites several reasons, including that food has been so cheap and plentiful in the United States that Americans don't value it properly.

Yes it is a hell of a shame that food is so cheap and affordable. Why can't we go back to the good old days of famine and having to eat tripes. Won't someone please think of the children....

Hunger would be a great way to cure the US obesity epidemic .

So would properly defining what is "obese" and what effect it has on health. Overweight is not an issue (well except to the eyes)...

Exercise and eating to the point of not being hungry rather than gorged is a far better solution.

Speaking for myself, with 4 mouths to feed, I don't waste a damn thing. I am doing my best to teach my son the value of the food on his plate as well. It is sometimes hard for a 4 year old though.

Just tell him about the starving people in Africa. That's what I always heard.

Haha..he doesn't know what Africa is. However he does understand the value of coins. He only gets them when he has been helpful for his mom when I am at work or if he "helps" me brew beer or do home maintenance stuff. If he wants something from the store he has to use his own coins. I tell him food costs coins and he kind of gets it.

I waste almost nothing. I almost never eat out, I usually buy what I need each day. Anything else is either frozen or dry storage.

Yeah, what the hell? I was raised in a house with these things called "leftovers".

I have a stocked pantry, a freezer, and a garden...very little goes to waste. It's not a problem to make sure everything gets eaten. That's what my son and all of his damned friends hanging around my house are for.

No, many people (business owners aka capitalist pigs) would love to donate to the homeless, but have been sued or fined for trying to do so. It's a health department thing.

It's not "socialism". It's that local/state authorities hate it when you hand out food without calorie counts and without all the other tracking etc that food sold in supermarkets has. Look at the issues that woman in (Boston I think) had for providing a free feed to local kids. Imagine what would happen if you provided left-overs to homeless in New York with a free soda....
