hit up Queensbridge or Brownsville. Make sure you identify yourself clearly as tourist.
Queens is for roughnecks and vatos locos only.

Get with the times, I live a very short distance from QB and it's not exactly Mobb Deep era dangerousnessess. They built a bunch of hotels in LIC, so the tourists are always in the F train stop on 21 street wide eyed and confused. Plus for some reason, joggers seem to frequent the area a lot. I guess the stretch is good along Vernon blvd.
Granted, my sense of harm might be compromised at this point.
NYC has changed dramatically for the better in the last 20-25 years from a LE/crime perspective.
When I was a kid the idea of my Mom going shopping there scared the sh!t out of me.
Now a bunch of old nanas could walk around and not get done over.
I think most people who have only been to New York or Times Square in recent years would be horrified at what it used to look like not all that long ago.
Same thing as Miami South Beach......they kicked out all the dirty hookers and crackheads.
My mom explains it as, you know where not to go back then but now it doesn't matter where the hell you are. Much of the character of the city and parts of the outer boroughs have been erased, both the good and the bad. One thing that tickles me, is that NYC is supposed to be very pet friendly yet has many buildings (old and new) that do not allow animals of any sort or are extremely restrictive. Plenty of older people will say it's not as bad as it once was, but the uneven genetrification of an area that just isn't good makes the "no go" zones that much fuzzier.
****, my Mom applied for a new building that is my family's old neighborhood in the city. That building along with the even more expensive one next to it (converted factory space) is built on a block that shares the elliot chelsea housing projects where she grew up. The pathetic thing is that any of these places that advertise low income only do it for a tax break. NY is now for tourists completely, happy days.
I digress
Bacon, since you only have a few days I expect you'll be sticking with the city. Activities really depend on what you are looking for, plenty of options for eating (cost is a factor and traditional vs modern and so forth) type of food, distance of travel from hotel to said places and the rest. Stuff to do and see is just not my area, I see no reason to be in times square for more than 5 minutes (10 if it takes you a while to get out)
I'd agree to a certain extent.....the wealthier and the tourists....like an urban Aspen.
Great place to visit, but would never want to live there........I used to have a lot of friends living there.......but only the ones with any serious coin still do....the rest got prices out of it.......not sure where all the young college grads live now......I heard even Hoboken is pretty pricey.
See: Statue of Liberty
Do: Rick's Cabaret
Eat: Pizza. Or see above.
Alright, I'm out of here. The Marriot hotel apparently has no internet. So I'll report back Monday.
Cheers!
