    PZL-Świdnik Unveils SW-4 Solo RUAS/OPH Helicopter

PZL-Świdnik, an AgustaWestland company, has unveiled the prototype of the SW-4 Solo RUAS/OPH single engine rotorcraft unmanned aerial system at MSPO 2012.
The SW-4 Solo can be fitted with a comprehensive mission equipment suite, also encompassing surveillance sensors, communication/intelligence systems and armament. The SW-4 RUAS prototype is expected to perform its maiden flight in a piloted configuration in the forthcoming months while the first unmanned flight is expected to be performed in 2013 / Photo: PZL Swidnik

The result of extensive development cooperation between PZL-Świdnik and AgustaWestland engineering teams, the RUAS/OPH (Rotorcraft Unmanned Air System/Optionally Piloted Helicopter) version of the proven single engine platform allows PZL-Świdnik SA to pioneer the exploitation by the European rotorcraft industry community of the benefits that modern rotary wing platforms can offer with unique flexibility for unpiloted operations and requirements. With this solution the company aims at playing a major role in the UAV sector which shows significant growth potential and market opportunities.
Nicola Bianco, Managing Director of PZL-Świdnik, said Unveiling the first ever Polish rotary-winged unmanned air system at MSPO 2012 is a unique opportunity to further demonstrate the leading role PZL-Świdnik SA is playing in the world aviation industry. For our company, remote controlled and unpiloted airborne capabilities are becoming synonymous with the highest possible technology achievements in aeronautics.
The SW-4 Solo is designed to deliver maximum flexibility to operators thanks to the capability of performing both piloted and unmanned missions across a wide spectrum of environments (both land and naval) and operational conditions. In a RUAS configuration the SW-4 Solo can carry several tasks such as Maritime and Battlefield Intelligence, Support, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance, Coastline and Border Monitoring, Homeland Security / Law Enforcement, Environmental Monitoring, Ground Survey and Mapping, Disaster / Battle Damage Assessment and Logistics and Cargo Supply. As an optionally piloted platform, the helicopter is perfectly suited also for passenger transport and training with 1 + 4 crashworthy seats.

    The versatile EC725

Eurocopter EC725 medium multi-role helicopter is one of the new products at this year’s MSPO. It has been developed from the famous EC225, known throughout the world as a reliable rotorcraft for SAR missions under most difficult weather conditions.
EC725 is also a candidate in the multi-role helicopter bid for the Polish Army, Navy and Air Force.">The Eurocopter rotorcraft has also been tested under combat conditions. EC725 Caracals from the Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre (French army aviation) have been used in Afghanistan on Combat SAR operations. These helicopters have also been ordered by the armed forces of Indonesia (6) and Kazakhstan (20). Brazilian navy and army are going to take delivery of sixteen EC725s each, while the air force of eighteen, including two in VIP transport configuration. Also Thailand considers procurement of these helicopters. EC725 is also a candidate in the multi-role helicopter bid for the Polish Army, Navy and Air Force.

142 EC225/725 helicopters are currently in use throughout the world, eighteen of these being used for SAR missions in seven countries. They have flown a total of over 250 thousand hours. They are used by the Japanese coast guard, French navy, Republic of Taiwan air force, Bristol Norway, CHC, Korean medical rescue services, PRC Ministry of Economy and SASEMAR.
From the very beginning the EC725 has been developed to meet the most demanding performance requirements: range, airspeed, payload. An excellent airframe was integrated with latest equipment, such as the 4-axis auto-pilot that allows hovering or picking up a survivor in all weather conditions, the flight control system (with all necessary capabilities: calculating the amount of fuel, SAR mission profiles, radio set control) that gives the crew 100 percent assurance of completing their rescue mission. A complete range of sensors (FLIR, radar, automatic identification system) controlled via a console in the cargo cabin or the cockpit and integration of components for location, confirmation, control, communication and data transfer. Open structure avionics allows problem-free integration of new devices in the future. All systems and equipment necessary for medical action and intensive care are mounted on cabin walls.
The transport version can carry up to 28 soldiers, the VIP version 8-12 passengers, and the medical version 11 stretchers and 4 members of medical crew. The payload of the EC725 is 5,285 kg. Flying at the economical speed (and with fuel reserve) the helicopter can cover 909 km, and its endurance (at a speed of 148 km/h) is no less than 4 hrs 20 min.
EC225/725 helicopters can operate regardless of the time of day and even at most adverse weather conditions. Thanks to reduction of pre-flight preparations to a minimum the helicopter can take off within 3 minutes after all crew members have entered it (not including any taxiing time). Its high cruising speed allows it to reach distant places within the so-called golden hour. The modern maintenance concept means that upon landing and completion of mission, all actions are performed in a short time, allowing the helicopter to be sent immediately again on another mission.
The Eurocopter rotorcraft has also been tested under combat conditions.

    Absent competitor

Military Aviation Plant No. 1 have not decided on a presentation on unmanned competitor MSPO SW-4 Solo Ruas / OPH with PZL-Swidnik. ILX-27 is shown in a few days, the ILA 2012.
Demonstrator, dubbed the ILX-27, is less than the S-4. Maximum take-off weight, is 1100 kg (manned SW-4 - 1800 kg) and designed payload is 300 kg. The helicopter is to develop a top speed of 215 km / h, and the patrol speed is expected to be 120 km / h The expected range is about 400 km. The ceiling is more than 4 km. Demonstrator is powered piston engine Lycoming O-540-F1B5 260 bhp / Drawing: WZL No. 1/IL/ITWL

WZL-1 unmanned helicopter demonstrator build in a consortium with the Institute of Aviation and the Air Force Institute of Technology. Plants from Lodz responsible for developing a prototype for testing, the project responds to quantity, and the control system AFIT. Some structures are designed with composite helicopter. Demonstrator has already passed the first test ground. In total, they have built three prototypes, Testing, testing ground and flight testing.

The current phase of the construction of ILX-27 should be completed by the end of September. The project is funded by the National Research and Development Center / Photo: WZL No. 1/IL/ITWL

It is worth mentioning that all the major projects in the last three decades, the Institute of Aviation, and financed by the state budget, failed. Starting from school and training aircraft I-22 Iryda, by including disposable plane I-23 Manager, the aircraft for training aeroklubowego I-25 As for previous project helicopter - IS-2. Ilot failed projects cost a few hundred million budget. The current phase of the construction of ILX-27 should be completed by the end of September. Unusual weapons from Tarnow

MSPO debuted quite unusual design of the Mechanical Tarnów (ZMT) - revolver grenade RGP-40 with ... underslung pistol.
Quite an unusual design - revolver grenade RGP-40 with underslung pistol Glock G17 / Photo: Remigiusz Wolf

The creation of such a system is a surprising answer to the problem of self-defense grenadier for short distances. Typically, a soldier armed with a grenade launcher have no other individual weapon, except for short. Hanging in front of the grenade gun gives him the opportunity to defend in the case of an enemy at a distance up to 30 m Accuracy increases the opportunity to build a set of shoulder shooter.
Proposed by the ZMT set was fitted with a new flask with adjustable length / Photo: Remigiusz Wolf

Glock G17 was placed in a rather extensive module suspended under the barrel grenade launcher. It consists of a sling is mounted inside the gun short placed on the sides of the segments universal mounting rails and trigger overlay. This last option allows you to shoot with a gun using a grenade launcher pistol grip. Just move your finger on the shutter button located below, rod of Glock trigger.

They look great! Simple design, but powerful! Looks like they use some BMP-1/2 suspension... Am I right?

Look here for full size pics. The first one is the 155mm Krab and the other the MT-LB based MAHSW 120mm SPM.
There are many more interesting pics in the linked album, too.
