Exclamation Pakistan in talks to hand Gwadar Port to China

LONDON - Pakistan is planning to transfer operational control of its strategically important Gwadar deep water port from Singapore’s PSA International to a Chinese company.

“We have reached an agreement with PSA where they have decided to leave the port at Gwadar. They are in discussions with a possible Chinese investor,” Babar Ghauri, Minister of Ports and Shipping, told the Financial Times in an interview.

Although the transfer of management control is likely to be portrayed in both Pakistan and Singapore as a commercial decision, any step that increases Chinese influence over its ally Pakistan will be watched closely by the US and India.

I am sure Bugti, Marri and Mengal disagree.

Rightly so, but a couple of RPGs lobbed by Bugti, Marri and Mengal wont make much difference.

Strange, reported in Singapore press that the project was a failure because of land ownership issues. Pakistan was unable to resolve, hence PSA International was allowed to exit. Unless there is some spin control here.

China probably has enough cash to resolve any land dispute. China could construct a pipeline from Gwadar to Xingjiang. Oil tanks from the Mideast can dock at Gwadar, and bypass the strait of Malacca.

What are they going to do... mount a D-day invasion out of that port? Or maybe put a big fleet there that can... do... something? What is this 19th C thing about a "base"? A "base" for what? And before you answer, think about a "base" with about 90 strike planes from a single carrier overhead... another silly illusion from the "great gamers."

Not exactly a game changer but It will defiantly create some implication for Indian Navy.

During the Kargil conflict India used its superior naval capabilities & able to severly restrict Pakistan ability to import Petroleum.

This was because Pak. was over reliant on Karachi Port which is closer to India.

    But
Gwadar is far away almost near to the Iranian Border. So a complete blockade would not be possible.

Although Port will be used by Chinese to bypass the strait of Malacca in during blockade, but
possibility to deploy the PLAN submarines can't be denied.

Just another pearl in the String of Pearls...

Presumably by the time the port is ready, their expeditionary forces and naval fleet will be too.

Not really. The only difference is where the company that runs it is based.

Sounds to me like 1)its a commercial transaction between companies and 2)the only people who care are not in Pakistan. In other words, nothing changes.
