    14.9 SOP Cartridge information!
    June 14, 2012 at 11:50 am

Disclaimer: This rifle and cartridge are not for sale in any form to the public, this project is for testing only as a sporting rifle for extreme range target shooting.

What happens when you take a 30-06 Springfield cartridge and neck it down to .270?? You get a new cartridge called the 270 Winchester, both great cartridges with different uses. Now imagine taking a 20mm Vulcan case and necking it down to 14.9mm. Put a super aerodynamic bullet in it and you have a new Ultra Long Range cartridge. That is the heart of the 14.9 SOP, to reach out past 2000 yards for interdiction of targets beyond the range of existing rifle systems.

Article and pics continue at link.

I don't think I would want to be on either end when it went off.

My understanding is that at longer ranges it is not the bullet or velocity so much as those things that effect the flight of the bullet, have a great effect on it. Wind, heat, sighting issues, etc.

Still, I am interested........... who knows it might be more that what it was designed to be.

I can see cartridge separation at the neck when this thing goes off.

I can see we'll have a great deal of uses for this 42 pound man portable sniper system . I really have no idea what it weighs but you could ask the guy that made the 2700 yard shot if he'd have rather humped a Barrett up to where he took the shot than the .338. I don't think something this bis has a lot of real world practicle use.

Having carried a Barrett M82A1 in a backpack....yeah, it is no fun carrying it. Didn't love giving it a piggy-back ride. I can only imagine that this would weigh at least if not more than the Barrett...and the ammo....more weight.

Well, it probably doesn't weigh a lot less than this or any of the others that have been developed:

I have shot a Solothurn, which is a 20mm gun. It was impossible for one person to carry.

I think I'll just stick to my mortars, but would be interesting to see.

I think the only difference between this thing and a mortar is the angle of the tube...

are you sure it would not be the head and neck separation from the shooter?

I heard they got the idea for this round from a hand-grenade in a tin can.

Is that 14.9 mm projectile something new or is it a pre existing bullet?
