Can you post a scan of the backside (with the writing) as well?
Good quality scan btw.
I'm not sure if the file I've attached is even visible - using mom's scanner which I'm unfamiliar with. Would appreciate anyone's thoughts. The family story was always that my grandpa was in the merchant marines. I know he was covered in tattoos from head to foot that he supposedly got from all the different ports. We have no papers to confirm this. Only recently while going thru some photos that a dearly departed aunt had, we found the attached photo of my grandpa, the only one I've ever seen of him in uniform. I've no idea if it's genuine or not. The writing on the hat says something like "...STELL(A)" I note there are no stripes on the sleeves. He would have served in the 19-teens, either before or during WWI. I have not been able to find a ship with that as the end of the word and there seems to be very little info on pre WWII USMM. I'm sorry to bother you with a request, but I'm not really sure where else to look. I'm happy to go elsewhere if you point me in a direction. Without more specific info, I don't think the USMM will be able to help.

Ok, that really does not help. :-/
A bit of a shot in the dark, but could the ship name on his cap be the USS Constellation?

Indeed, could be "N" before the "S".
And there is no ship with the letters "stell" in the USMM.
At least they have some kind of records of the ships that were in service for the USMM.very little info on pre WWII USMM

Macac sylv**** - it just could be! I'll go with it in the absence of any other ideas. Thanks a mill.
These are examples of sailors from the Constellation, uniforms are very similar if not identical, try a name search on the site. Good Luck!

Macaca sylv**** - Dad is insisting he was a merchant marine and not a sailor - that it was his opinion that he worked on all different ships. Could this photo be my grand dad just dressing up? I think he should have some more on his uniform, a stripe on the sleeve, or at the shoulder, or something? His hat is not straight (not surprising knowing what I know about him) but in every other photo the name Constellation is clearly visible. The mystery continues! But thanks a mill for your suggestions!
