The man was a legend....and a loose canon by many accounts. I live and grew up not far from Newtownards where there is a statue of him.
He was the most decorated British soldier of the second world war who did not receive a VC.
Just came across this on youtube.

I read the book on Paddy Mayne by Hamish Ross some time back. Interesting chap.

Proper 'stuff of legend', was Paddy - a bit like Thomas Cochrane a hundred and odd years earlier.
Interesting film but needed less Eddie and more Paddy...
I don't care how great a Formula 1 driver you are, it's not comparable to the SAS in WWII...
^^^ thouroughly depressing - a classic example of self medication for PTSD through alcohol IMHO - interesting that the trick cyclist seemed to ingnore that. I wonder if he had any real experience of either PTSD or soldiers...
I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet but by accounts I've read that would seem very plausible. After the war ended supposedly he became pretty withdrawn except when he'd hit the boozer and ended up the night in fight, he'd turn up the next day and pay for the damage ... rinse and repeat. Of course he had a great reputation for doing that (drinking and fighting) before the war also.
Here's another book I read about him once:

It was a pretty good read.
His picture's in my sig for those that didn't know.
