Thumbs up Sea Shepherd vessels clash with whalers

Anti-whaling vessels from the Sea Shepherd organisation have collided with the whaling ship Nisshin Marym. The Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR), which owns the Japanese ship, said in a statement its vessel was rammed at least five times by Sea Shepherd vessels Steve Irwin, Bob Barker and Sam Simon in the Southern Ocean yesterday.
The incident occurred as the Nisshin Marym came along its supply tanker for refuelling, ICR said.
There were no injuries to the crews of the Nisshin Marym or its supply tanker.
ICR claimed video of the incident showed Sea Shepherd deliberately ramming its vessel.
Steve Irwin captain Paul Watson said it was "ludicrous" for the Japanese to say Sea Shepherd were the aggressors.
"The Nisshin Marym is 8000 tonnes and our vessels are 500 tonnes. We would cause absolutely no damage to them if we were to do that.
"What we were doing was holding our positions to prevent them from refuelling illegally and it was the Nisshin Marym that tried to move us out of those positions by hitting us."

Normally I would agree with you, but being one of only two really commercial whaling nations and trying to disguise it as science (which the other one doesn't) certainly could be used as a defense for actions like this.

Regardless of the legality of ICR's 'Antarctic research', this course of action was an example of deliberate negligence of safety and it endangered every vessel and everyone involved.

Hopefully SS is condemned for their high seas vigilantism.

SS has plenty of supporters. Unfortunately I don't buy into any of the offered justification for this behavior on any level.

I'm 100% against hunting whales, which is quite hypocritical seeing as I'll have nothing against hunting wild pigs for example, but that sh*t is pure idiocy, risking the lives of the crews of both ships.

So would standing up to a dictator, protesting to proliferation of nuclear weapons in the middle east, fighting against social injustice, protest against race discrimination, fight for religious freedom, serve as a soldier, appear in a public square if you are a celebrity or get in to the car to go to work in the morning..

It's just different levels of commitment and way of legitimize the cause to yourself, personally I do not see the need for commercial fishing of whales. It serves no purpose just as catching sharks and cut of their fins, rioting at a football game or shooting your neighbours cat for food doesn't serve a purpose.

    @ sniff

So animal right groups should be allow to attack farms, research facilities and other such structures and endanger the lives of the people who work there... The potential danger to the crew, ship and ENVIRONMENT they pose far outstrips any good they do.
