Arrow Activist groups hold Queer Muslim Gathering in Detroit

A two-day gathering aimed at educating and liberating Muslims in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community opened in Detroit on Friday.

Muslims for Progressive Values and the Agency for LGBT African Americans, or KICK, teamed up to create the Queer Muslim Gathering, which included a meet-and-greet on Friday and an all-day conference Saturday.

The gathering featured Imam Daayiee Abdullah of Washington, a gay Muslim leader who grew up in Detroit and converted from Southern Baptist Convention, the Detroit Free Press reports.

“We feel it is important for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered) Muslims to be included as equals into the straight Muslim society,” Mr. Abdullah said.

He said the goal of the conference was to empower gay Muslims, “to educate them on their Islamic rights, to debunk homophobic theories that is passed on as ‘truth.’”

Topics discussed at the conference were homoseuxality and the Quran, how to develop prayer spaces for gay Muslims, and how to “keep it halal,” or legally permissible in Islam, the Free Press reports.

KICK Executive Director Curtis Lipscomb told the Free Press that the conference is trying to “promote an egalitarian Islam where all are welcome regardless of race, denomination or sexual orientation.”

“We confidently believe that in the next 20 years, this Islam will be the norm in America.”
Imagine the reaction if such a rally was held in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.

But it wasn't, it's here in the US, so who cares what the Saudi or Pakistani governments, or population would think? And either way, I'm sure that those in attendance found the entire event to be FABULOUS! I wonder if the music they played during the meet and great sounded anything like this.

The more gay Muslims the better. Hopefully they can do a Queer Eye for the Gay Muslim and update that turban fad.

Somehow I don't see deterrance value on this.

It might deter more people from heading toward MI. I know several people who's head would explode if someone told them they were a black, gay, Muslim. It'd rank just above them being a black, gay, Jew.

I predict a spicing-up of those thobes and kiffiyehs.

In any case, good for them.

Or it might inspire a fatwa of cleansing to prevent the tarnishing of the faith.

So, in theory, these guys can visit Mecca, but I can't?

I'd feel offended if it wasn't politically incorrect.

I doubt they'd survive long if they make an happening à la Pussy Riot or a gay pride in Mecca...

As Sootan said, they can, if they keep their mouths shut, and that the custom officials don't know about them.

And lesbians can't go without men related to them, so lesbian women should be offended too.

Anyway, good luck to them ! Wanting to be a free gay muslim must be a tough fight... But also a good side ! They accept who they are, they can stop being "tough islamic man" with women, they're free from the stress of hidding and pretending, and... they letting moar women for us hets !!

Curiously there have not been any "spontaneous" deadly riots in the "muslim world" fueled by this.

Looking good. I'm hoping this progress will continue until the Saudis are the only muslims refusing to "grow up"...
