Vintage guitars is an insane market. We're talking about something that was popped out of the factories as mass produced goods, just like tooth brushes. Production standards were often poor and the goods were cheap (in case of some manufacturers). and yet, you can sell it at insane prices nowadays, just because it's totally overhyped!

The same can be said about collector cars.

there's a big difference IMO. Car collectors usually know exactly what a car is worth, depending on its condition, age and rarity. if a seller puts one up for sale and demands a totally inappropriate price, chances are very high he won't be able to sell it without drastically discounting it.

With guitars it's quite different. just check prizes on ebay. total crap that has been modded the hell out of it is bought up by clueless fanboys that are tripping over their ****s to spend their bucks on it because it's eiter "made in japan" or their favourite guitarist used to have one "just like this" back in 1973...

True but I was referring to this part of your statement:

That could just as well describe 50's and 60's US autos. Churned out quickly and sold relatively cheaply. They are not inherently valuable, time and fanboys have made them valuable.

Production output from Early 30's to 69 wasn't like mass production like you get nowadays where Fender / Gibson is outsourcing there Product to be made else where IE Mexico , China , South Korea ,Indoneisa . Guitars that have Value are the models that were built between a specific time period and in Limited Numbers , 1930's Martin D25 Acoustic original is worth $250.000 Basic .

yes, those have value that matches the price. Guitars from the 70s-80s are a totally different story.

BTW, Fender Guitars have always been mass produced since the very early days. Their construction and limited number of parts are a testimony to Taylorism and economies of scales. And yet their 50's models are sought after just as much as any handcrafted Gibson model from the 30's.
