Going to need more of these they way the F-35 production is coming along![]()
The meteor wasn't exactly "nice looking" but it paved the way for some greats.... Buccaneers, Hunter, Harriers etc. Even the (SEPECAT) Jag .
Seventy years ago today Britain’s first front-line jet fighter took to the skies at the height of the Second World War.Almost 4,000 Meteors were built and they were exported to serve with countries around the world during a time when Britain truly ruled the skies.
And this month one of the last Meteors still in airworthy condition – the oldest flyable British jet in the world – will take to the air over Cornwall to mark the opening of a new museum at Newquay Airport, the former RAF St Mawgan.

The article is a bit misleading, as it suggest a Meteor is being restored to flight, but instead two Meteors who are flying all along are taking part in a anniversary.
The Meteor has a bit of a ironic combat record as a large percentage of its aerial victories were other british build planes, including a few Meteors and a RAF Canberra![]()
Technically the greatest number of victories scored by the Meteor was against German jets. It's just that they were unmanned V-1's and incapable of defending themselves...
Yeah there's some irony for you.
Meteor is a ironic plane.
The same company that built the last RAF biplane built the first RAF jet.
Its only "real" WW2 kill was a Fieseler Storch.
It was the only thing that ever damaged a V Bomber.
It served in the mideast conflict on both sides.
One of its last kills was a RAF Canberra.
^ And Meteors fought other Meteors at least once.
One of my Grandad's best friends (and my flying mentor of sorts) was a navigator on Meteors during the war (as well as on night-fighter Mosquitoes).
The stories he had were absolutely incredible, and he was sharp as a razor until the very last days of his life.
One of its last kills was a RAF Canberra.
may know the story behind, btw always love to see all these oldies flying.
A Syrian Meteor shot down a RAF Canberra PR7 on 6th November 1956
