HOKKAIDO, Japan (Mar. 03, 2013) - Marines and Japan Ground Self-Defense Forces move in on an enemy position together during the final comprehensive bilateral force-on-force training evolution March 2-3 during Exercise Forest Light 13-3 at the Hokkaido-Dai Maneuver Area, Hokkaido, Japan. The training began with the Marines and JGSDF patrolling separately on foot and by mechanized vehicles to reach a temporary position and setup a hasty defense. When they linked up, the two countries combined forces to prepare to clear and secure the objective the next morning.

The Minnesota National Guard's Bravo Company, 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 211th Aviation Regiment - the Chinook outfit famous for taking the "All Night Long" moniker after their latest deployment - recently sent more than 80 percent of its pilots, flight engineers and crew chiefs to Fort Stewart, Ga., to become proficient on the upgraded model "F" CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter.

The Virginia Air National Guard's Virginia Beach-based 203rd RED HORSE Squadron holds a memorial service March 3, 2013, at Camp Pendleton to honor 18 unit members and three Florida Army Guard aviators who perished when the C-23 Sherpa they were flying in crashed in a cotton field near Unadilla, Ga. 12 years ago. The 18 engineers and three Florida aviators from Detachment 1, 171st Aviation Battalion, were killed March 3, 2001, as the 203rd members were returning home after completing a two-week military construction project at Hurlburt Field, Fla. The C-23 crash was the worst peacetime aviation disaster in the history of the National Guard, and the worst loss of life in the Virginia National Guard since World War II.

A U.S. Army Ranger Joint Terminal Attack Controller from 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment conducts Close Air Support proficiency training at Fort Smith, Ark. The 75th Ranger Regiment trains their Forward Observers (MOS 13F) as JTACs through the Special Operations Terminal Attack Controller Course at Yuma, Ariz. and was the first unit to have Army Forward Observers as JTAC qualified personnel.
