Tanks deployed to rescue snowed in motorists on motorway. Innovative!
During especially snowy winter (1999-2000, IIRC) our battalion's M113 ambulances were used for this purpose.
Romania (282nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade) used this year MLI-84M-ARV to help snowed in civilians (photos) --- January 3013. Last year they did that as well (plus Medevac versions).
However, I have never heard about tanks being used for this. I guess this happened since Hungary uses mostly BTR80 wheeled vehicles.
But why not use the BMP-1 (they're tracked)? Why use T72? Is it the power?
You're right BogT, all BMPs are retired in Hungary. And i guess they simply did not have enough ARVs to mibilize that's why basic T-72s were also out.
so I gues hungary will have to deploy light armour too, to reach stranded, in snow, photo cameras.
seriously, where are the photos?
This January we used several PTS-10s and VT-55s.
And also firefighters BVP-1 CAS version
No tanks, though.
Tanks aren't all that great for people rescue, not much interior room for transporting anybody. We used M113's and M577's back about 1982 to get stranded people of the roads and supplies to shut-ins around the Colorado Springs area.
