So... rocks are not red but grey?

That is one transcending discovery indeed!

    I was just exaggerating.

But can the confirmation of an assumption be called a major discovery?

Confirmation that Mars once had abundant, persistent fresh water suitable for life? I would say so.

CJ will probably lock this thread because of its science content.

In fact it is more the use of the word "discovery" that makes me perplex. Since there is ice on both poles, big rifts, canyons looking like the Grand One, etc... the presence of water was quite obvious even though not confirmed.

To me a "major discovery" would have finding fossils or something of the same nature.

Anyway, I am probably too demanding.

Exactly. Sending a remote controlled robot to another far away planet, landing it and doing experiments with it is highly fascinating and a great achievement for mankind, already. These first experiments are probably only the first if many more to come.

Hopefully weŽll do something similiar with the Jupiter moon Europa in the future, as it is one of the most suitable candidates for extra-terrestrial life in our solar system, AFAIK.

to me it would have to be that the earth crew lose contact with the rover and the last image sent was of a blurry figure aproaching the camera and the feed gets down
