It happened to my jump master when sport parachuting in 1967. Flying in a Cessna the jump master was tossing wind direction flags out when his reserve caught on the door. It sprung out of the pack but dragged him down the side of the plane ripping out part of the fuselage, then he never made another move as we watched him drop 3,000 ft with a streamer. Dead on impact.

Not sure if you are responding to my comment but the jumpmaster was Airforce combat control at England AB in Louisiana. They trained there and had a sport parachute club as well. ( I joined for the hell of it) We bought our chutes from salvage for $25 and had them modified to a double el for another $25. Training was 4 hours. (steering, PLFs, jump procedures)

I saw this somewhere else and there was a comment that the guy was a jump master with 5th Group. He apparently landed 30 miles from the drop zone and was unharmed.

Those 5th group guys are always good for a chuckle. Good to hear no harm came to him.

So did they tie a chute to his static line and then cut him loose? What happened there?

    Hung-Up Parachutist Release Assembly (HUPRA)

Only seen it used once - think I'd probably refuse to jump the next time if it was me!

An SAS PJI got a George Medal back in the 60s for climbing down the tape and cutting the hung-up jumper free and landing them both under his canopy,

Really cant figure out what happened exactly, its not like the things are wired to blow... you have to give them a good tug.

    Guess he was ok?
