    Olympic hockey is the coolest.

230 American athletes. Largest ever winter team for any country.

And here we go again, CNN video-reports:

    Sochi uneven development
Sochi is a city transformed by new infrastructure but not everyone is happy with the development. Ivan Watson reports
    http://edition.cnn.com/video/data/2....pment.cnn.html

So an old babushka who had her house demolished to make way for the big arenas has gotten a spankin' new house in a fresh neighborhood and she's happy with that! Kudos to CNN for actually having the balls to go against the olympic bashing parade and mention at least one of the myriad of extremely positive things this has brought for the region.

...But somewhere on the outskirts there is a little rundown forgotten village completely unrelated to the Olympics and of course you can find some grumpy old farmer who's had a bad day and says that the brand new highways etc ruined his views. Well, I feel sorry for the man, I really do, because it looks like he's quite poor and has stayed in a village that has probably seen continuous depopulation and decay since USSR times. But still, where exactly in the world is it any different?

Oh well, surprisingly balanced at any rate.

WOW.. That is pretty awful clothing. I wonder if it will be more tolerable once they get out onto the expanse of the ice?

    Virtual tour of Sochi http://airgorod.ru/sochi/tour.html#/pano0/

To say I'm impressed is underestimation, i remember that sleepy town with crappy infrastructure and god-awfull serpentine roads from a decade ago and only can say WOW!

To illustrate look at that http://airgorod.ru/sochi/tour.html#/pano1/ with icons over old terminal and new terminal, and that is pretty much overall picture of improvements

I am rather certain that is photoshopped.

It is... but there has been a joke going around to the likes of "Putin gave Alina the Olympics. What did you give your girlfriend?".

Default Zach Parise named Team USA captain

Minnesota Wild left wing Zach Parise learned how to be an NHL captain by watching Jamie Langenbrunner and now will succeed him as captain of the U.S. Olympic team.
Parise had a dressing room stall next to Langenbrunner, then the New Jersey Devils captain, and was one of Langenbrunner's alternate captains at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Not a bad choice. He is a solid, rounded hockey player.

x2--I have kin around that area who follow the Wild. They are happy and pretty proud for him and the Olympic team.
