The Hatakazes are not really modern anymore, they're the equivalent of the Kidd class sold to the RoCN

I am wondering if after this second flight of Atago cruisers they will stick to the Aegis system.
Perhaps the next cruiser class will use a domestic system, a powered up version of the system found on the Hyuga and Akizuki classes?

They are a hell of a lot more powerful than anything the PN has now, and would be a credible threat to PLAN warships and subs.

The Hatakaze are SM-1MR equipped ships. At this age, I think you gotta think about feasibility of maintaining such system.

It would certainly be possible to remove the missiles and magazines and install VLS cells. They make retrofit Mk.41 VLS modules in every shape and description, and a lot of navies have updated their older ships with such installs.

The version of the radar Akizuki and limited by lack of power eddy, and how you want to use the SM-3 in the new ships would hardly use a national radar.

This developing versions radar Akizuki class for smaller vessels.

I think Japan is more likely to make major changes to the hulls of the cruisers to improve survivability against next-generation threats than to the combat system. Zumwalt more or less retains the same AD/ASW capability as the AB, but it's much more survivable. Though it's also probable that they'll begin to use more domestic computer parts and sensors.

I think the two Aegis ships can already begin to utilize some of those design features, like the high-strength CFRP used to improve damage tolerance and reduce radar reflection. These could just be the precursors of Japan's trimaran DDG/cruiser designs. The semi-trimaran design on a ship the size of Atago would yield some valuable information for that program.

Check this article: a BMD IR-detection UAV platform and a new line of escort ships dubbed '25DD' (the DDR Revolution) are also mentioned.
