they moved into afghanistan to support a communist afghan govt. that asked for the soviet union's help.

now on the question of whether or not the russians got beat or whether they accomplished their mission and withdrew, i dunno. i've heard arguments for both sides.

    1. Russia invested a lot of money in A-stan.
    2. We ran weapons to the drug lords and helped them destabilize the country.
3.Russia invaded to save their investment.
    4.The Russians got beaten.
5.Then the bastards (Al-Qaeda) turned on us.

Simplified version of what have happened
Soviet Union wasn't too excited about having unstable, war lords run, extremist muslim, etc country as its neighboor.
Puppet government was installed and kept in power by the Soviet Army (reminds you of anything?)
An unsuccessful attemt to civilize the country was made.
After seeing "no light at the end of the tunnel" SU pulled out.
Soviet installed government was overthrown and religious extrimists took over...

Da hell. They needed a port?

I have heard the port theory as well. They wanted a sea port in warm waters that connected to the indian ocean.

OK but did they really think that they could just walk thorugh A-stan and take over Pakistan too, with little trouble?

That would probably be grounds for a jihad against the red menace (if there wasn't one already), not only for swallowing up a few Islamic republics into it's empire but invading two more by military force?

Come on now, there have been a few underestimations throughout military history and that one would definitely make the list.

Hopefully someone could elaborate on this "port" theory.

(Not knocking you BadKarma, just Soviet planning if that was true).

You got the US and the USSR mixed up. It was the US that invaded A-stan b/c it needed a port.

A-stan was either the first country to recognize the Bolshevik Russia, or one of the first. Their relations go at least that far. A-stan was not run by warlords before the Soviet invasion. Per-invasion years are a very interesting subject.

"A Soviet Afghanistan plus a warm-water port on the Indian Ocean would lead to a grip on the Gulf oil supply lane and a crowning military move to outflank Western Europe."
