As I recall, and stand open to correction its an ordinary GPMG configured to fire blanks and be used on training exercise, the blue is for health & safety criteria, at a push and the removal of the blank-firing adaptor it could be used to fire ball ammo.

Why??... they are old but great at what they do. Light fast and great for the soft Irish Bog which other newer tanks sink into. It is great to see that we still have them.
Irish Soldiers during the recent training exercise in Sweden involving Irish and Swedish troops who form the Nordic Battle Group which will be on Stand-by from 01 Jan 2011 for 6 months. The exercise was to test the Battle Groups operational capabilities prior to the Stand-by period commencing. The Irish form the ISTAR element which provides intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance capabilities to the Battle Group.

Irish U.N.I.F.I.L. Member armed with HK G3?
Seems the soldier in the pictures with the blue flack-vest is a Swedish U.N.I.F.I.L. soldier he swooped rifles with the Irish soldier for the pictures.
