In my opinion during the WW2 "Emergency" period.

Default Irish UN Troops in Cyprus.

    http://www.rte.ie/archives/2013/0305/372833-soldiers-speaking-irish-in-cyprus/

In this RTÉ News report from 1964, Kevin O'Kelly meets some Irish soldiers who are part of a UN patrol in Cyprus. Labhrann sé le Lieutenant Todd faoi na saighdiúirí eile agus a gcuid oibre.

Many of the soldiers are from the Gaeltacht and talk Irish amongst themselves, though they have little opportunity to speak it during their duties. O'Kelly points out that Irish was used as a secret code in the Congo, but Todd tells him they weren't long cracking it.

The short based landrover and APC are sourced from the British Forces on Cyprus, interesting to note the Radio Op has no mag on his F.N. as does another soldier to the rear.

I love the ould fella in the background behind the radio op "Awck, sure it'll be grand so"

Interesting to see the reference to Jadotville.

Has anyone heard anything about plans to replace two of the Navy's ships?

IMHO In light of the current economic crisis with multiple barrack closures and disbanding of PDF and RDF Units I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I read today that the Defence Force is looking for 700,000 euro each for two vessels, hoping to sell them off to African nations as it intends to replace them within 18 months.
