As part of the SOPMOD Block 2 program, USSOCOM is procuring a CQB Receiver for the M4. It has a 10.5" bbl and is apparently being manufactured by Diemaco. This appears to be one of those weapons:
Recently, however, I read about a Colt receiver based on their R0933 that is also in service. Then, I read an article by Charles Cutshaw, editor of Jane's Infantry Weapons and all around small arms guru, that certain Army special operations units had procured compact carbines from M2 Corp.
Does anyone know the real story about what compact M4's are actually seeing use?
I heard SOPMOD Block 2 was an 11.5in CQB barrel but could be wrong. I do know 22SAS are very happy with their Diemacos but they are definately not using Block 2 stuff. So...not much help really!
The DEVGRU shot though is certainly a short arse CQB barrel job though. Havent heard about the M2 or Colt receivers. If anything comes up I'll post.
The pic of the 10 inch m-4 looks like thats has been around awhile. Looks like the m4 in the pic has a ris system on it also. I think the first one of the shorties where called Colt Comandos.
I read that they had looked at both a 10.5" and 11.5" and decided on the former. I don't remember the source on this but will see what I can turn up. I did read over on ar15.com forums that the Diemaco chopped receiver has been assigned a NSN number and that the procuring agency was Crane NSWC.
They have had barrels like this for ages, they just havent been standerdized for SOCOM use. I was more impressed by the M16 upper that reduced recoil to the level of an MP5 and improved reliability to that of an AK47.
um, wasnt the block 2 program scrapped long time ago?
anyway over at tactical forums they say that the lmt uppers are used in the 11.5 forms. they also coment that they where the most reliable ar15 type rifles with sub 14inch berrals ever used.
pat rodgers and forgmen (of the marines and the seals respectively) both agree that lmt make the best of the ar15 types by a mile.
