Those monitors have incredibly thick screen glass - I don't believe handgun rounds penetrated it (I was present when that picture was taken), neither did the buckshot. They took quite a beating until the glass finally collapsed - I believe it was a 12ga slug that did it in. Since then, I felt rather safe using my old CRT TV screen as a safe aim area when dry firing - now I got a Plasma and that thing won't even stop a flung Wii controller![]()
My new US Rifle, Caliber .30 M1 Stripped receiverIt's a Harrington and Richardson one dating from June of 1956. Need to clean it up and look foward to makeing it a repo M1D Garand.
This is from the CMP and ran me $150. Now I just need a Winchester and an IHC to round out my Garand collection...
Still got something else in the works from the CMP too![]()

nice receiver, are you planning on gettin your barrel through the CMP or another source, i know Numrich arms has a few different condition barrels to choose from, decent prices too, i may get a new barrel for my M1 from them.
I've been thinking about buying a CMP barrel when I order my Lake City .30-06, also been looking at some of Fulton-armory ones, and of course the local gunshows. HRA are nice becuase just about any barrel would be correct on one, HRA, LMR, etc
I may also just buy a barrel from Warbirds custom guns, as they will be converting whatever barrel I get to an M1D barrel, plus all the NM work. I'd rather buy new, or see the specific USGI barrel I would be buying for this project, but I'm going for a lot of accuracy, the prices on Numrich are pretty darn good though...
What grade M1 did you get from the CMP?
my M1 isn't a CMP gun, got it a local shop. i haven't had it looked at but by examining it, probably hovering between field and service grade.
i've been tryin to get the time to shoot the qual and join the CMP, i really wanna buy a 03 Springfield from them.
i've heard a lot of good things about Fulton Armory, i'm gonna buy a new complete bolt assembly from them at some point for my M1.
Ah, any idea what the ME or TE is? if you don't have the gauges for it, just drop a .30-06 round, front first, into the muzzle. The more of the round you see the better the ME is.
Like so:
There is no actual qual course for the CMP, just have your local rangemaster sign off that you shoot, there is a form for it on the CMP site. Anything under the "MARKSMANSHIP ACTIVITY" list will be fine: http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles...quirements.htm
Not sure if your gonna get one of the 1903s there was quite a frenzy for them when they were released and they may not be anymore till 2009. If I'm lucky, I made the cut on a M1903 and I mailed my order the day after they went on sale...
Is your M1 a Springfield? Any pics?
its a Springfield. well lol i'm screwed for now on the 03 Springfield. i need to join now so i can get dibbs on one of those M1 carbines they are gonna be selling soon.
EDIT: muzzle errosion, i can see a bit of bullet, my batteries are dead on my digicam i'd take a picture if i could, when i bought it i knew i was gonna have to rebarrel it at somepoint.
well, it depends what you want, they took the numbers they had of them down, but give it another week and you'll know what survived the first orders, some of the common ones (remington m1903A3s, SA m1903s) had over a 1000 units in stock, so you may be ok if you hurry.
I, too, can't wait for the carbines, I'm hoping for an Inland or an IBM. More info due out on them on Feb. 16ish.
Thanks for the headsu p on Numrich, didn't know you could order a specific barrel make, gonna have to see if I can find some reviews on them.

only experience i've had with Numrich is their Yugo 24/47's, my company sells 'em and they are actually in good condition, much better than the Century pos's we sell.
Time for an updated WW2 picture:
1945 SA Garand, 1956 HRA Garand Receiver, Mossberg 44US, M1911A1 (repo), 1943 Remmington M1903A3
Cold Steel:
Yeah that's a 16 inch WWI era bayonet on the 1903A3...
Missing from my ww2 pic is my Colt m1917. Looking forward to the CMP M1 carbines in two months, got a line on a decent Eddystone M1917, and maybe a repo M1897 Trench gun...
Did i mention I like WW2 US firearms?![]()

is nice!! i liike. a lot of money right there lol. i have this customer who comes in all the time, buys curio-relic guns like no tomorrow. he's in his 70's always has stories about how back in the day you could buy surplus M1 garands for like 75 bucks, 03Springfields for 100, and GI 1911's for like 25 bucks. i hate myself for being born in 1985.
Ah, the infamous Garand Thumb....
I hold the op rod back whenever I have finger in there:
That's the best way to load one, hold the op rod back with the edge of your hand and use your thumb to push the en bloc in. (please forgive the mess in the background, lol) Are you putting rifle grease on the 4 bolt locking lugs, op rod track and the barrel where the op rod slides accross? Most people don't and their accuracy suffers due to it. Speaking of which, what date (or other markings) are on your barrel?
That's a mighty nice M1 you got there, Garands have to be my favorite firearm ever.
I also long for a chance to go back to the 1950's and hit up the surplus market with my current back account, I'd have WAY to many rifles if that happened, lol.
