I slightly reassembled the gun last night because I wondered how it would look with a non glossy stock, and I really dig it. Hopefully the Easy off will help lighten it up by getting some cosmoline out of the wood in some areas, other than that it almost looks great just as it is. Kind of "military" looking.

My only real concern is to get the handguard matching with the stock, IIRC the majority of these M24s have mis-matched handguards

It looks pretty good like that, that vintage military look as you said. If you want to get rid of some of that cosmoline, I'd suggest looking at Lowe's or Home Depo for some good Paint/Stain remover. It should come in sort of a gel/liquid form in a metal jug. I used it on one of my enfields that had a lot of cosmoline on it and it really drew out the stain, cosmoline, and really helped degrease the wood. Any hard core paint/stain stripper should do. Just get some heavy duty rubber gloves and stripping pads. Oh, and even if the hand guard is mis-matched, it should work out ok. Except if you are going to stain it, which I wouldn't suggest because the wood looks nice without it.
