I guess I may as well say it.....I get the Garand Friday, it's gonna be a loooong 4 day wait..right now I'm trying to read up as much as I can so I can figure out what to inspect when I get to the store
Probably the biggest hinden thing is the gas piston. You probably won't beable to look at it in the store. I have a friend who is very good on Garands, to bad your not local, I wold ask him to look at it for you.
There is some Greek 30-06 on garand clips for sale, about $100 for 400 rds(shipping extra), a good buy. I would suggest getting a can. Also CMP has Greek 30-06, really shoots well in the garand too. About $117/440 rds, encludes shipping
d3ath if you can, bring a .30-06 round with you when you go to do the "bullet test". its not as accurate as using a real erosion gauge, but you can get a pretty decent idea of the condition of the muzzle/barrel...i know hollis knows way more aboot this than me. also i if i can, ill post a vid of me pumpin rounds into a big 5 mannequin.
I saw on the CMP forum that they usually have muzzle erosion tools to let people use at the store, so hopefully I'll be there early enough to get that...I'm trying to get something with a half decent ME/TE, for shooting..it doesn't have to be pretty because I was planning on getting a Boyd's/CMP stock in the future. after reading some of my Garand book and looking at forum, I guess I want to find a high serial number (post-WW2 date), seeing as those usually have more updated parts and in better overall condition, probably will get a SA, but people on the cmp forum have said that the south store has gotten a lot of IHC's, a brand I know nothing about but I suppose it's more uncommon to see an IHC receiver than an SA, everyone was buying those up without inspecting them. And as far as ammo, I'm either going to buy one of those cans of greek 30-06 (50$ can, 192 rounds IIRC.) Or some Lake city 30-06, if they come pre-clipped, but I can't remember. Thanks for the info guys, any ideas on what I should bring to the store with me?
So far I've gathered:
- latex gloves (b/c of the cosmoline)
- flashlight (to better inspect for damage/pitting, checking the bore and chamber)
- papers (duh)
- money
I've pretty much faced fact that I will end up with an ugly beaty - a rack grade, but I have some slight hope that there will be some Danish field grades there. I really wish I would have done this a year ago and gotten a Service Grade, pretty shameful on my part...can't believe some guys max out their 12 garand limit each year..there would still be plenty of high grade rifles left if it was 3-4 garands each year.
Oh yeah, I'll take a lot of photos when I go there...I'll put em here and at CMP for those interested, I'll make sure to grab a photo of the 2 carbines they have on display there, he he
yea...lol money is a good thing. lake city ammo is good, i think right now i have a 2 bandoliers and a few random clips of greek and lake city stuff, next gun show i'm gonna go and buy me a can of .30-06. if they'll let ya bring some hoppes, some patches and a cleanin rod to make sure you can actually see what the barrel looks like.
I'll try to inspect the ones I pick out as much as I can, I'm going to try and get there right when it opens, but I'm already expecting for a mass of deranged collectors fingering through every rifle and snatching about 3 or 4 a pass, lol.
Hopefully I won't buy the first one I look at, but walking out with anything will make me proud
