I redid the stippling texture (more consistent now) and added a groove to the bottom of the trigger guard. This new texture gives a better grip, yet not too aggressive as my daily carry piece. Took a while to strike that happy balance for grip vs carry comfort/snagging.

Don't rely on trees as a backstop. My mother in laws first husband was shot in a hunting accident. The bullet travelled hundred of meters through a bunch of trees (im assuming minor deflections) before hitting him in the head. Was just his time i guess. Im a tad conservative with gun safety. Too many people get killed by accident. On my uncles farm a wife shot her husband by accident on their honeymoon. She was shooting over the car and he stood up as she pulled the trigger.
Re the rocks, bullets + rocks = ricochet, experience suggests that even when bullets are not supposed to, they do. I have had 22 magnum rounds ricochet of wet ground, shotgun pellets off trees etc. I wouldn't have believed it if it hadn't kept happening. On the upside, wrt the 22magnum my mates shed is now dead. We pulled the pin as even after passing through hares the bullets kept going.

The trees in the diagram are just to show what the ground is like. the ranges are being built into old Quarries below ground level to begin with. I know a 7.62X39 will penetrate about 18" of sandbag/packed earth, so the plan is to use Berms at least 3-4 times that thickness. We have thousands of Sandbags being filled also. Target stands are simple wood about 8' high total with the intitial backstop being railroad ties 15' high X 3 layers thick. One of the other guys thinks we should seperate each layer with an intervening fill of earth. Myself i use Frangible ammo as much as possible to avoid the chances of ricochets.Originally Posted by T3ngu

It would be for a 18" bbl SPR.
I've got a Leopold 3-9x scope on my 20" Hbar and a Bushnell Eotech-type on my 16" carbine. With this one, I want to have accuracy, but also quick target acquisition. Durability and price are factors.
M4carbine.net and AR15.com had positive reviews.
For that price there's not much that can go wrong.
Maybe not a GAU-8A.......but a friend of mine has a fully functional M1A1 105mm howitzer in his garden, and a 2 cm WW2 german flak in his garage.

Like I said in another thread, Vortex Optics are excellent. I have the Strikefire (a 170$ aimpoint type sight) and it has been beaten and poked and pruned and snipped and still shoots a 4 inch group at 100 yards.
Sure, it may not be an aimpoint, and I cant say "hey, look at my 1,000$ optics" but if it breaks, i'm only out 150 bucks (got it on sale at gander). I have the three year replacement plan on it too!
Go for it, you won't be dissapointed with it. I can darn well guarantee it.
