Beo, how was the weight? I have an M1A Scout that I love as a shooter, but I'm not sure I'd like to hump it and a whole bunch of 7.62 x 51 ammo all over God's green acre. I admit my O-L-D starts acting up and I get cranky.

500 rd .22 here is 14 - 20 dollars. 500 rd 7.62 x 39 is about 200 dollars. Maybe more, the price bounces around a bit. Back when ammo was cheap, .22 on sale was $7.00/500 and 7.62x 39 was under $100/1000.

I like 22 a lot, not because of cost, it is just fun. Other thing about steel case ammo, easier to clean the area with a magnet on a stick.

When I was in RVN, what was liked about the M16 over the M14 one could carry twice as much ammo.

yeah - its heavy-ish. I suppose it could be worse i.e. m249 or 240 - but to go from an M4 to the M14 without a good reason would probably suck once you started walking a lot.

I would LOVE to own one though - they're pretty expensive.

We have an old school M14 in the office, but we don't really use it.

    Clear_blues, pretty rifle.
H, I enjoy shooting the snot out of .22s, they are just plain fun and you can reinforce good habits with a lot of repetition at a good price.
Beo, I agree. Shoot it all day from a nice spot, but if I have to go for a long walk, taking all my stuff I'd stay with an M4.

    storytime:

one of my last missions was a 2-day event. We usually take helos everywhere which seems cool at first, but of course means you have to walk everywhere once you're on the HLZ.

I travel pretty light, but our overwatch platoon is always sucking because they have all the heavy stuff (base plate, ammo, guns etc)

So we finish the first day's work and establish our PB - we have resupply coming in the morning.

When resupply gets there we've got everything set up - nice wide area for them to toss our bags, we have a JTAC on the radio and another on the ground to guide them in - smoke is right in the center of the flat spot where we are on the high ground.

Where do they drop our food and water? Yup - down the side of the mountain. It took us about 5 hours just to make the movement down to the low ground. it was some of the worst terrain i've ever had to travel on, there were parts where you had to actually climb, like toss your ruck and weapon to a buddy and climb down - it was pretty ridiculous. I wish I had photos, but everyone was too poopy to think about taking pictures.

Everyone was talking about finding the aviators and beating their asses.

oh I forgot to mention - it was the wrong side of the mountain too - so we had to walk around to get to our next OBJ and HPZ.

    What are you buying, Hollis?

Reason I ask is because I get Tula and Wolf Military Classic for $5.00/box all day long locally, and can usually get it a little cheaper when buying in bulk online. Not amazing ammo, but it works fine for plinking.

I was going by what I remember. During the ammo crunch it was more. I just checked, it is about $105 for 500rds. Still last time I bought it was $80/1000. Just like 7.62 NATO (brass case) was 120/1000. now it is somewhere around $120/200. Seems some prices are dropping. I don't think it will get to the 2008 prices. It might. I have plenty on hand so, I don't buy ammo often. Sorry for the mistake and thanks for the correction.

Old rule of thumb, a person never has enough 22s. I think I do have enough. I have a little Beretta 22 auto. Great little carrying piece as long as I am not looking to get into a firefight with the Zetas.

I stocked up at the end of last year with enough to last me through the election panic (I hope). .22LR, 12GA, and 9mm I can find at Wal Mart all day long. However, 7.62x39 has been creeping up slowly since Christmas or so; I paid $4.39/box for Golden Tiger at the end of last year. Today, that same ammo is at least $.50 cents/box more. What's surprised me is that the ammo I buy from two local stores has stayed at $5/box or $125/500, which I don't consider unreasonable. Usually I'll pick up a box or two on my way to/from the range, just for the sake of replenishing what I shoot.

Truth. I carried (with CCW, natch) a Walther P22 for a while, and I've occasionally carried my .22 S&W Model 317 (snub). Very light, very user friendly.
